Prince Harry and Meghan in Near Catastrophic Car Chase in NYC

Honestly, the press should just ignore them altogether. Paparazzi have enough bread and butter from other celebrities (and that’s what H and M are - garden-variety celebrities - not USA royalty).

Totally agree. I’m pro- Harry and Meghan but the amount of attention they receive (both positive and negative) doesn’t match their contributions to society. Leave them alone and let them prove their worth through their works- charity, media, whatever.

Honestly, I just don’t really care about these paparazzi photos, and I imagine the majority of Americans are the same; this isn’t England. We don’t have royalty.

That's one thing I don't really get. What is the great $$$ market for these photos such that paparazzi would find all of this worthwhile? They were just photographed at the event. Are the cab photos worth anything? It's not like capturing pix of something private or unseemly or interesting.

I read someone speculating that the paparazzi were following them not to get pics but to find out where they were going for dinner (apparently nowhere) and where they were staying so they could get pics that night or the next day. This explains why H&M refused to go back to their place, they wanted to be secret and hidden, in NYC on their own terms. It doesn't explain why any of this was 2 hours (or even 90 minutes, as the Sussexes have later said).

That’s the weirdest part for me too, assuming that the photographers really were blowing through lights and going on the sidewalk because otherwise I really don’t see how this happened in NYC). Maybe they were trying to see where they were staying to try and get candid photos later?

Add me to the people who feel sorry for them (would hate to be followed by photographers at all) but find the issuing a statement like that a bit odd

Can you stop saying stuff like this? It's so weird. People are allowed to not like a celebrity. They're objectively annoying. No one is wishing death on them.

You can dislike them. But the fervor around the situation is what’s toxic and can lead to worse things. Same thing happened when his book came out and people were looking for “gotcha” lies- like how TJ Maxx doesn’t have sales. When the normal public read that same line they understood that he meant clearance events.

If you dislike them so much, you can mute their names on twitter, or not open the thread on dcum. You’re putting yourself in a position to be annoyed by them.

NP. It sounds like you are more annoyed by the dislikers.
Too bad, this is not China. Public discourse is important regardless of whether you agree or not.

My question is, what did Meghan actually do to receive that award? Just for being half black? She does not even date black men, only white ones. So, what has Meghan do to benefit the mankind?

Fair point! I just meant that if one wanted to avoid them, they could. Harry and Meghan, and the paparazzi, tabloids etc, will continue to profit as long as people keep talking about them, good or bad.

The taxi driver, Sunny Singh, said it wasn't a chase.

The taxi driver also said NYC was safe.

I think it took 2 hours total, they switched cars - went back to the police precinct etc.. honestly were being super stupid. Just let the paparazzi take pictures, it is what it is. The avoiding the paps/war on paparazzi is Harry's little medieval war and while he is right- this sort of thing makes them look ridiculous.

Yes, this is basically the right take. Not catastrophic on the one hand. Not a terrible lie on the other. Just a bunch of silly decisions ending in a self-created waste of two hours.

And frankly an accident could very easily have happened, high speed isn’t required for a tragedy they happen ALL THE TIME in cities all across the country. A pedestrian could easily have been hurt or killed by erratic driving of paps chasing them.

This really matters to Harry, his mom DIED this way. I think it is sad to see all the folks reacting so negatively and mocking them. They provided ample opportunity for pictures before and after the event. This kind of paparazzi stalking of ALL celebrities should be socially unacceptable. Media should refuse to publish pictures taken this way. The whole practice should be done, it’s intrusive and often creates unreasonable risks and dangers. Enough.

Yep. 100%.

Annnnnd they need a better PR team who can be honest with them. Although i recognize that it might not be possible for anyone to ever get them to understand that they’re their own worst enemies when it comes to unforced errors. This happens again and again when they release Important News. I posted back on page 1 that it was shameful for these paps to do this, and it absolutely is, but the ensuing sh!t storm of what constitutes a “high speed, near-catastrophic, 2 hour car chase” is completely on them. The timing of the release – soon after the news that Harry is again trying to get crown protection – makes it seem convenient and contrived. They need staff who can help them take a beat, read the moment and proceed carefully. Until this happens, the cycle will repeat over and over.

I also agree and love the analogy of "unforced errors."

I heard from investigative journalist Leland Vittart that there really was no authentic catastrophic episode and that things are being pulled out of proportion:

OF course it was. That's their MO for pretty much everything

Meghan paid for the paparazzi through backgrid.

Read the statement from Backgrid and their statement of the 4 paparazzi supplied by Backgrid.

The only disorderly driving was done by one of Harry's security suv vans following the taxi. Also, why are Harry and Meghan riding in a taxi being followed by 3 security SUV vans with tinted glass. Why were they not riding in one of the SUV vans they commissioned.

It sounds like Backgrid is cutting ties with Meghan now.

Looking forward to seeing their evidence.

That’s what I don’t understand. You see photos of celebs going to the grocery store in LA and they step out of those big SUVs with security in tow. Why wouldn’t the Sussexes do something similar for a high-profile event?

Why are they so against being photographed when they are out in public. It sounds like if they just let themselves be photographed, the location where they were staying was just a few blocks from the theater and they could have been "home" in 15 minutes instead of 2 hours. Instead they were trying to make some weird point about privacy? People out and about in public have no expectation of privacy.

They’re fiercely protective of their kids, and I don’t think NY has the same paparazzi laws as CA. Since Meghan’s mom was there with them, maybe they brought the kids too and didn’t want the paparazzi to know where they were staying to be able to photograph them leaving the next day.
