PP here - I agree. I think time will tell if she's really a musical prodigy or whether people just fell for the niche of teen angst drama/breakups/love songs.
I respect her as an artist even though I'm not a Swiftie. There's some business savvy in tapping into a genre of music to make it her own - she can market and drive success leveraging a niche. Her style of songwriting in storytelling lends itself to breakup songs. Let's be real, every generation needs a movement. Without any talent however, I don't think she could go this far. Personally, I find her WAY more talented as a musician than Beyonce, who I think is more of an entertainer than an actual singer/songwriter. Ditto for J Lo who is a dancer. I loved Madonna a great deal but - I think her genius is as an artist/entertainer. I think Lady Gaga is very much in the vein of TS except does not have that niche of song. My take is that love or hate TS, she has a leg to stand on as a singer. |
She's been asked by the NFL to perform at SuperBowl 9 times and has declined 9 times. Doesn't sound too thirsty to me. |
17 years after her first single and she has the world's biggest tour ever? I think it's time to stop noodling this. She's legit. |
I am a casual fan who likes some of her songs that I hear on the radio but I will forever be impressed by the way she handled Scooter Braun and the other a-hole bros in the recording industry. Those contracts seem really exploitative of new artists who are desperate for a deal, and those industry practices should change. Unless she does something terrible in the future like deeply insulting someone, I will stay in her corner. |
Why do you think that is? |
Playing at the superbowl is not the highlight of most artist’s careers. You get a lot of criticism no matter what you do, and are playing for a wide audience, many of which don’t like your music. |
This. Very few musicians are able to generate new musical hits decade after decade. The average band is over in 6 years as far as generating new hits. |
Not a swiftie. And I'm not really a fan of her songs, though a few are catchy and I like to belt them out in the car or on Karaoke with the best of them.
Having said that, her entire song/image/tour is a vibe and a positive one. Her concerts are an experience that, from the MANY people I know who have gone to them many times over, are fun, positive, empowering. Their words not mine. And she's making hand over fist for a positive experience. What's not to like and admire? It's the same for Jimmy Buffett when he was alive. He had his niche, knew what it was, and gave his fans what they wanted. I also love to see women succeed. So I love to see her doing well. (and encouraging the Get Out The Vote). |
Not a huge fan of her music (although her work with Aaron Dessner has established some genuine bonafides) however I have MAD respect for her accomplishments. |
She is a robot |
Yep and she spent an hour at her movie premier taking pics/selfies with fans. Not many artists do that. Then Beyonce came to support her which is huge, since Bey did not "need'' to be there. Obviously they support each other. TS then posted how she wouldn't be where she is w/o Bey. She's truly a good soul. |
Band-aids don't fix bullet holes You say sorry just for show If you live like that, you live with ghosts Except, then she wrote that song about midnight and the ghosts coming back to haunt her….. so it is a little up in the air about her and her soul. |
Her songs all sound like the kind of stories I used to daydream about when I was 12. Cool to hear them again, but am surprised that she has stayed 12 for so long.
That being said, she makes music lots of people like, and is making crazy amounts of money for it. Good for her! |
I saw the Eras movie today with my preteen daughter who loves to dance and several of her dance friends. I completely agree that the experience, at least from the movie, was incredibly uplifting and positive. I think her crew is excellent and it seems she looks out for them. It was a joyful musical experience for us so I’m grateful. I’m not qualified to opine on whether she’s an especially talented musician so I won’t try. |
I like Taylor because she has mastered the capitalist system and is exploiting it as she should. Good for her! |
