Taylor Swift is awful (and her music isn't even very good)

but the fact that you had to go back a year to bump a thread to add your MAGA comments . . . .

She is amazing. You are wrong.

I probably could not identify any of her music, but I love seeing women doing well!

I mean, you can say this is partly due to the sheer volume of songs she has written, which is true. There are also examples of clever turns of phrase or catchy lyrics. But it's ALSO true that many, many of her songs are simply the ramblings of an emotionally immature person trying to sound "poetic" about love and romance when they haven't every really experienced much more than shallow relationships with short-term boyfriends. I find some of her more heavily produced, dance-able songs really fun and catchy but simply do not understand the appeal of the vast majority of her songs and don't understand why she gets lauded for her lyrics at all. I have a stack of journals from my late teens/early 20s full of stuff like this. It's relatable (or was when I was that age) but not impressive.

I haven’t read this whole thread (yet) but i have to jump in on this link. Most of the “terrible” lyrics here are from songs written when she was 13-19. 13-19!! the lyrics may not be the best but they are a hell of a lot better than what any of us were able to write at that age.
haters gonna hate, hate, hate.

taylor swift fans are people who like music about failed relationships. swifties are mentally ill people in a parasocial relationship with a celebrity.

I like a couple songs she's done but I don't know that I'm a "fan." I would not spent a zillion dollars to see her show and I don't listen to her all day and I do think people are a bit nuts over her.

However - she is a pretty damn good song writer. I'm not into her stuff but i am a musician and there are a lot worse out there. She has written prolifically which to me means that she is truly musical. I don't begrudge her because ultimately, she isn't completely untalented. That being said, I think she definitely knew how to market herself and from a business perspective (very much like Beyonce) has succeeded in her career because of her saavy over pure talent.

I would suggest that artists like Prince, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews - these people really know how to make music and it's less business that got them where they were and more pure talent.

NP - It's very rare that musicians who write A TON of stuff has every song written well you do realize that right? That you can pretty much write a few really good songs is not exactly an easy feat. She's not the best and she's far from being really great BUT I'm going to say that in this genre, she's pretty damn good! Lyrics are very much about being catchy. You know who Madonna is right? You know that most of what we have that's popular is going to be pretty damn catchy right? People aren't going to flock to see someone who writes like Dylan. I mean, they might but even Dylan had hooks.

girl, i’m a swiftie 🫶🏼
we’re on the same team here.
i was simply saying that the article linked listing her “worst lyrics” was comprised mostly of songs from debut-speak now, songs written when she was very young. and even at that age, her “worst” lyrics are leagues above what most of us could ever write.
And I’ll take a few ME!s in exchange for the lakes, the great war, right where you left me and evermore.
long live😘

But I will say I think her music sucks and she seems too boring to even think about as a person. zzzzz...

I have a friend who loves Taylor Swift and every time she has a new album (or, inexplicably, an old album re-released as a new album?) my friend tell me that I am going to "looooooove" some new songs and then I listen to them to humor her (I listen to a lot of music, I am open minded, I'd be happy to discover something new I like) and they are universally boring and repetitive. A few of her hit singles have very catchy hooks and that's it. Her ballads and the stuff really singer-songwriter-y stuff? It's actively bad. And this is not about disliking the genre or disliking women or disliking women solo artists or disliking singer-songwriters, as I like Kacee Musgraves and Courtney Barnett and Angel Olsen. But Taylor Swift is trash.

Also my friend bought a Taylor Swift branded cardigan at one point and when she showed it to me I had to refrain from treating her like a person in a cult because (1) it is ugly, (2) it was way overpriced, and (3) ... why couldn't you just go to like Urban Outfitters and buy a non-Taylor Swift branded cardigan.

Deeply confused.

Tell me more about how open minded you are

Taylor Swift just called me in tears because she saw this thread. She has to open fresh pack of $100 bills to wipe her tears.

She doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry…….all the way to the bank.

Gen-X here -- I really like her song Anti Hero. I think it's brilliant.

I’m not sure her music will stand the test of time like Carly Simon or Whitney Houston-seems like it will be more forgettable like Wilson Phillips. But she means a great deal to a whole generation of girls and she’s unapologetic in a way that I think is empowering for them.

None of these names will be famous 100 years from now.

Whereas Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Clara Schumann, Liszt... are revered centuries after their deaths.

Let’s put modern composers/entertainers in perspective here.

Your post interests me. If your assessment is true about Clapton, Prince and so on (and let's add Dolly Parton to the list), then that makes me wonder if TS will be remembered long beyond the lifetimes of Swifties.

Only a very long length of time indicates what's truly going to last.
