Losing weight without vigorous exercise

Anonymous
Has anyone here lost weight without major exercise routines? Can cutting calories and moderate exercise do the trick? I need to lose about 30 lbs. and I don't mind moderate exercise, i.e. walking (good pace), light weights, yoga. But, I just don't really enjoy exercise and and can't seem to make myself run or do crossfit, or spend hours lifting weights.

Losing weight is mostly diet.

Yes, weight loss is a function of diet. There was just an article in the Post about this. I lost a lot of weight on weight watchers without any vigorous exercise.

I lost 35 lbs over about 6 months. The first 30 or so was through diet change alone. My weight loss slowed as I got closer to my goal weight and I found I didn't lose any unless I added at least some moderate exercise (ie. 35 minutes doing intervals 3x per week). I was still about 10 lbs over my goal weight when I got pregnant, so I would guess further weight loss would have required more exercise.

For weight loss, diet modification is critical, but to keep losing and to maintain weight loss you'll need to find some form of exercise that you don't mind doing -- gym, power yoga, hiking, bicycling, whatever ... you'll probably need something.

Walking, light weights and eatig healthy are the only things I do and I'm in awesome shape. It will take you a few months.

Weight loss is mostly diet, but the combo of both speeds up the process.

look at marksdailyapple.com

he is anti- what he calls "chronic cardio" and advocates long walks and "lifting heavy things." Like our ancestors did.

It's very easy to follow his advice. You just have to go primal with the eating, which is not as hard as paleo eating. It's paleo+optional full-fat dairy+ a little bit of red wine/dark chocolate. But no grains, OP! You are switching out of eating bread/sugar carbs and into eating veggies, protein and fat. It keeps you steady as you don't do the sugar hi/lows, and you don't need to snack all day either.

I found out about him through DCUM and it has changed my life. Yes, DCUM changed my life!! I thank DCUM every time I cook up pork chops in Kerrygold butter.

I lost 100 pounds by diet alone. It took me a year. I did no exercise (none)! But it required a wholesale change in my eating habits. No snacking, only three meals a day, and cutting out flour and sugar.

It's totally possible, but you have to be very disciplined to lose weight by diet alone.

I lost 5 pounds over the last few weeks by walking at least 30 minutes a day with 3-4 longer, more strenuous walks per week (hills, faster pace) and eating about half of what I was eating before. I am very overweight.

I have lost 10 pounds in the last months by switching to 3 (reasonable) meals a day. Obviously snacking was a big issue to me. I am no longer trying to decide between low carb or low fat or low sugar. I just eat 3 reasonably portioned meals. Of course getting rid of snacks got rid of lots of carbs and sugar..

Wow, congratulations! Would you mind sharing more details on what exactly you ate or if you followed a specific diet plan?

I joined a 12 Step group called Food Addicts in Recovery (www.foodaddicts.org). They have a specific diet plan. The meetings are free and there are lots in DC and MD. If you are interested, give it a try. It's not for everyone, but it worked well for me. I found that the best part of the program was all the support from other people who had also successfully lost the weight and were keeping it off for years at a time.

I lost 30 lbs without exercise. Cut simple carbs, cut desserts for a while, cut portion size, increased protein especially in the morning and at lunch. I walk as much as I can but no classes, etc. I found in the past that when I dieted AND exercised I got hungrier, plus convinced myself I could eat more since I exercised, and it never worked.
