I'm a fed. Everyone in my office thinks the Dems should stand firm. I don't believe you're a fed.

sounds like we need to balance the feds in that they reflect the voting makeup of the country

Our standards are much higher than that. Most of us have PhDs. You're not going to find many qualified Republicans to hire.

Most feds have PhDs? Sure.

If most Feds don’t have PhDs and you still couldn’t find a job there what does it say about you?

Why do you think I couldn't get a job as a fed? For that matter, why do you think I would *want* a job as a fed? I have a job that I like.

If this post is indicative of the reasoning levels of federal workers, perhaps a shutdown would be for the best.

Then why the extreme hate for Feds if you can get a job so easily? You just sound jealous and ignorant, typical MAGA.

In my office they do. Agency-wide, the professional staff are about 60-70% PhDs and 15-20% Masters degrees.

And what percentage of your agency is "professional staff?"

About 65%. Some staff in administrative and support positions have graduate degrees, too (including my secretary), but I'm sure the breakdown isn't nearly as high.

Yeah, none of this is true. If you are really claiming this, please identify the agency.

NIH, FDA, NIST, NSF, National laboratories….
Are you really that ignorant?

The DoEnergy "National Laboratories" are Government-owned contractor-operated. As contractors, they usually stay open during a civil service shutdown.

Parts of the government that are not a line item in the budget also generally stay open.

agree with the above poster that long-time federal civilian employees are mostly moderates.

Wake up for gods sake they are Donna a shut down to distract from all the other shit

Like the National debt growing while Trump steals taxpayer moneys, Epstein and scotus making us never able to vote again you dam fools

An Ipsos poll showed that 4 out of 10 federal workers voted for Trump in the last election, so this whole trope of Feds being wild-eyed liberals is just another MAGA lie.

I grew up on a farm in the middle of Nebraska and I have a PhD. I do reflect America and our ideals.

Your grammar is part of the problem.

I received a link to join the call for my agency on Monday to hear plans for a potential shutdown. I am so over it at this point that I doubt I will join the call. A lot of people have the link, so I am not special and won't be missed. Somebody in my office can pass down the readout.

I would say 75% of my Fed coworkers are Trump supporter. Some have stopped supporting him after DOGE.

The agency as a whole doesn't do a meeting, but our group always schedules a meeting for the day before. It is partly a tradition at this point.

I’m a Republican who is a federal employee.

I think that most Feds do not talk politics at work. It’s pretty much forbidden so you’d never know what people’s views are. I don’t think it’s polite to talk politics in the work place. Lots of our jobs do lean republican but I’m sure there are other agencies that lean more democrat.

I suspect there are some pretty strong selection factors.

Blue collar positions seem to lean heavily Republican regardless of public vs. private sector.

STEM positions, regardless of agency and mission, seem to lean heavily Democrat. Part of that is correlated with higher education levels, but it is likely exacerbated by the fact that the people taking government jobs were willing to accept substantially reduced pay compared to the private sector. Lawyers seem to fall into a similar bucket.

The agencies with law enforcement and national defense missions seem to lean Republican, although that doesn't seem to make its way into the IC as much. That might be selecting for the people interested in those missions as well as a higher percentage of military vets. Though, the younger vets don't seem to skew heavily Republican as far as I've seen.

Will VERA be offered next year? That would be a great way to get rid of those of us who weren't eligible this year.

What happens with health insurance during a shutdown? What if we are fired instead of furloughed?
