They were wrong at the last shutdown. The only people making money off this are the platforms.

What were the odds of shutdown last time?

No. It might be moving them up a bit, but it wouldn't increase the risk of it happening at all.

How do you know this? Are you sure or are you speculating? Because at my agency we are not doing RIFs and are down so many people that we are seeking hiring exemptions - but the shutdown puts the prospect of firings on the table.

That’s what we thought too at DOI but then RIFs were announced this week. We’re so short handed. They need to start cancelling programs instead of having skeleton crews working nonstop to try to maintain the ones we have.

No? Then don't expect federal workers to make the same sacrifice to satisfy your politics.

I'm a fed. Everyone in my office thinks the Dems should stand firm. I don't believe you're a fed.

sounds like we need to balance the feds in that they reflect the voting makeup of the country

Our standards are much higher than that. Most of us have PhDs. You're not going to find many qualified Republicans to hire.

Most feds have PhDs? Sure.

In my office they do. Agency-wide, the professional staff are about 60-70% PhDs and 15-20% Masters degrees.

And what percentage of your agency is "professional staff?"

Np we don’t have non professional staff (do you mean secretaries? I haven’t seen one in a decade.) My office is over 80% grad degrees.

First, it's not particularly left wing. Mostly moderates and small-c conservatives. A fair number of Republicans. DC is a blue city but most feds live outside DC, often in red states.

Second, one party has made itself the anti-government, anti-education, anti-public programs, anti-laws party. So yeah, the people who do government and believe in government as a concept might vote a certain way today. (They didn't always, see above.)

Third, the idea of a viewpoint test for government jobs is un-American.

About 65%. Some staff in administrative and support positions have graduate degrees, too (including my secretary), but I'm sure the breakdown isn't nearly as high.

Yeah, none of this is true. If you are really claiming this, please identify the agency.

You don't have to believe me, but it is true. I'm sure we're not the only agency that looks like this.

NP here and my agency is like this - a division of HHS. Think about it.

PP here. I'm not in HHS, but we're another STEM agency.

Yes, we were already told who is essential and not. Even those who are “essential” can only do the “essential” parts of their work.

We made a long list and a short list. We've always used the short list, although we almost switched over to the long list a few weeks into the 2019 shutdown.

My agency hasn't released anything either. I agree that everyone will be essential and so the shutdown won't matter.

But is that list still applicable? I guess that’s what I’m wondering. The shutdown plans that was posted for my agency (I think from 20203?) was removed.

There are two natural ways to interpret the national security part of the essential list, so we've long sent up two lists and let senior management decide. We did the same thing yesterday. I don't know what they'll decide.

I do think feds will lose more jobs and will not get back pay if the government shuts down. There have been so many things we have said Trump can’t do then he does and the Supreme Court backs him.

So, if rape is going to happen, we may as well lie back and enjoy it? Is that you (from the grave), Todd?

Mine hasn’t. They are being super crazy hush hush. They won’t eve utter the word shutdown. It’s very bizarre.
