Saying "Sure, crime is a problem, but..." is such a tell. It's a guaranteed sign that:
-- You don't actually think crime is a problem, because it doesn't affect you. It's a sign of your extreme privilege.
-- You're a white male, and often a mediocre white male.
Crime is a problem AND its ridiculous that people blame Charles Allen for it. Is that easier to understand.
Some people blame Charles Allen for crime, which is inaccurate.
Some of us blame Allen for an incredibly inadequate response to crime issues in the district. Which is 100% fair. He did a bad job with the crime bill (both drafting it and explaining it) and he's been terrible on crime issues in his own ward -- his response to rising crime on the Hill has been to deny it's happening, make sympathetic noises, and look the other way. Meanwhile we have businesses closing and people moving away the crime is so bad. Many of us don't feel comfortable walking around our neighborhood after dark anymore (and many of us who feel this way remember what it was like years ago, so this is not just people who are new or uncomfortable with urban life -- I've been in DC a long time).
He didn't cause all the crime in the city. He also has done nothing to make it better despite having opportunities to do so, and fails to support his constituents in combatting it.
