Charles Allen faces recall effort

Anonymous
Ward CM up for re-election in 2024 (under HR they have staggered terms, can't "vote them all out" + need electable candidates w/different views)

W2 - Pinto
W4- JLG (challenger Lisa Gore)
W7 - open, Gray is not running again
W8 - T White

AL - R White, Henderson

He has a big ego, doubt he will be fazed and he does have a lot of support on Hill. We'll see how much of it has shifted and how much support recall attempt gets.

Has anyone ever been recalled in recent past besides Evans?

Happy to see Henderson stay (and will vote for her, and actually hope she runs for Mendo's seat when it's up again) but would love to see the rest ousted. If we could get rid of Allen, too, all the better. Then also replace Bowser.

But yes, we need electable candidates to replace them. It's frustrating how shallow the pool is in DC, which is how so many awful retail politicians with no policy chops win elections in a city full of pretty smart, competent people (many of whom are legally not allowed to run for office unless they quit their fed gigs).

Several newcomers to DC with VERY thin cvs on current counsel - Nadeau & Allen. Pinto has acquitted herself well imo but also falls in that category. Very little work experience besides "activist" type jobs for many. Shows.

Mendelson was just reelected, not up this cycle.

Goulet has now blocked himself with his unhinged Twitter presence.

The system will misuse power to protect its own.
How is Frumin a part of the "system"? The Green Team had two candidates (Thomas and Monash) and belatedly embraced Goulet.

Enough. Electable people besides Lisa Gore need to step up. soon.
Winning an ANC election does not make the now-crime-concerned Gore "electable." Getting beat by Anita Bonds by 8000 votes does not mean "electable."

The city of Washington, D.C., is holding general elections for city council on November 5, 2024. A primary is scheduled for June 4, 2024. The filing deadline for the primary is March 6, 2024, and the filing deadline for the general election is August 7, 2024.
Phew. Got something right.

"The other side: Allen points out that he won re-election unopposed in 2022 with over 90% of the vote."

I don’t know that the prior election is a good indication of how a recall election would go.

Allen rode the wave of 2020/anti-Trump/BLM progressivism into an unopposed primary. At that point, I think candidates didn’t run against him because being to the right of Allen (even if still a democrat) made you “racist.”

In 2024, people are very worried about out of control crime and Allen has arguably made the crime situation worse. A “tough on crime” challenger could definitely get a lot of support in Ward 6 at this moment.

Didn't he run unopposed? Of course he got the vote. Recall effort yay! I'll donate and I don't live in Ward 3. His legislation is a disaster for all wards

All the usual suspects who are a big part of the problem coming out hard against this. I hope the recall effort publishes a way to donate.

The mayor and every council member must be recalled and replaced with true conservatives who will implement sane, tough on crime policies, before DC will ever be worth living in again.

Regarding Gore, her loss to Bonds was not head to head. Bonds won with 36% of the vote to Gore's 28%, but the remaining 36% was split and ng multiple other candidates. If we had ranked choice voting, the outcome might have been different. Bonds had much higher name recognition than Gore going into that election and Gore over performed versus expectations because her campaign message resonated with voters.

So yes, she is "electable" in a way that, say, Erin Palmer is not. Palmer got a larger share of the vote versus Mendo but it was a head to head race. So basically if you wanted Mendo out of there, you voted for Palmer. And she still fell short. In the end I just don't think she had a message that resonated with voters.

But Gore does.

This is an absolutely hilarious rationalization, as evidenced by your conclusion sentence.

+1, crime is worse now. I think there was goodwill for Allen when he testified in Congress, because the GOP congressmen were so obviously trying to use DC to score BS political points. But when you see businesses closing down because of repeated break ins and lack of action from the city, and Allen silent on it over and over, and when you see citizen groups and business orgs working to do something about crime where Allen has done nothing for people in the Ward (as you now see on H Street with people working directly with police to get foot patrols and increased enforcement and Allen not even being involved in the process, which I find mildly shocking when I compare to how other Ward reps have handled crime issues).

Allen ran unopposed in the last cycle and we still don't have a good candidate emerging but I am extremely open minded on this issue at this point. And I've spoken to enough neighbors who are absolutely fed up with he crime and with the lack of action from many officials (Allen, Bowser, the police chief) and ready to simply clean house.

Running the city into the ground as an act of solidarity against the GOP is so on brand. Change the names all you want, but so long as this mindset persists, DC is going to have a rough going.

Lifetime resident of Capitol Hill checking in.

He won’t get recalled.

He uses “evidence-based” policy to justify his support for lax on crime legislation.

He does a good job being responsive to pot holes and sht like that, but we need someone strong on crime.

Can someone else run? Please. Just anyone who won’t side with the perpetrators of crime over the victims?
