Framing Britney Spears

Sounded like she was mad that this new conservator is making her go to therapy.

Just because someone is not 100% able to understand reality or handle finances or day-to-day living does not mean they are completely not functional or stop having skills or abilities.

Right, but then it becomes a fine line between slavery and indentured servitude. What Britney experience was indeed slavery. She honestly just needs to quit working completely and see who still has a vested interest in managing her affairs then. It's clear that her family's entire motivation is just money.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe she is currently thinking along these lines. Hasn’t she said that she won’t work anymore until her dad is no longer her conservator?

And her dad isn't her conservator anymore. She's complaining but she's not making sense.

Well, it sounds like she wants more changes than just swapping out her dad. Which is fair. She’s a person, not a show pony.

Read her statement. She's complaining about going to a therapist 2x/week and a psychiatrist 1x/week. And she's very upset that she wasn't allowed to go out and get her hair and nails done during COVID. But all of these horrors that she's complaining about happened under the professional conservator, not her dad. She hasn't done shows in years.

Those complaints are not unreasonable on their face. We all got to make our own choices about which risks to take during the pandemic. I can understand that she would like to do that too. Also, she has enough money that her overseers could have allowed an aesthetician to be paid to do her nails in her backyard while wearing a mask. Her desires and preferences should in fact matter when it comes to her own life.

Yeah, she had reason to complain about conservatorship under Jamie, there were so many conflicts of interest there. But now? THe things she's complaining about suggest to me that she's not competent to make healthy choices.

Most people would complain about someone else making choices for them instead of allowing them to make their own choices. That doesn’t provide any evidence that she’s not competent.

Sure, i hope I'm wrong, and as someone said, tons of pop stars flame out without anyone watching them and if that's what Britney wants, there's a case to be made for allowing her to do so. But no one is going to be able to gauge competency if she won't let them evaluate her, and that's what Britney really doesn't want.

Well, surely the mental health experts who have been meeting with her three times a week have some idea of her competency.

What about the psychiatrist she meets with once a week? What’s the excuse there?

Also, “competence” is not a diagnosis. It’s a legal determination for which a judge may seek input from mental health professionals.

In my opinion, she shows few signs of being high functioning as a previous poster suggested. Moreso, her thinking looks very limited, specifically her capacity to link ideas in a clear, sound way, and to do so consistently. She does not think abstractly and therefore cannot comprehend deeply. For example she said she was being punished and forced to comply with treatment because she would not do a certain dance move. She can say simple things that make sense and ring true. She knows her experience yes and that is heart wrenching. But beyond this personal, egocentric level of thought, her overall capacity to comprehend abstract levels of connection appears limited. She is a very concrete thinker. And her overall intelligence appears below average
Anonymous
Poster above...her overall intelligence has likely been severely affected, obviously by her mental illness. I did not mean to say she was dumb or be cruel, I meant to say her mind has been ravaged by the illness. And the treatment too sadly, affects her thinking.

Anonymous wrote:Britney Spears is a full grown adult who literally supports her entire family, parents included, and has since she was a child. While her choices may not be my choices, she had a right to self determination. The conservatorship is cruel and oppressive; if she wants to marry her boo, get pregnant, and flush her money down the toilet, who are we to stop her? As long as she isn’t hurting herself or other people, let this woman live. And more importantly, keep her leechy parents out of her bank account.

Her father and brother are just gross. I saw a video of her brother being interviewed and his comments were disgusting. All he would focus on was how strong willed the women in his family are as if that was reason enough for Britney to be in this situation. The terms of this deal are unusual in giving the father a % of the money she makes on top of very generous monthly payments. It is disgusting and she shouldn't be paying EVERYONE'S legal bills.

I'm not a psychiatrist, but an evaluation is very different from a ongoing session. One is a detailed assessment of observations to get at the root cause of the impairment. The ongoing session is treatment of the impairment. Obviously observations from treatment would be brought to bear to verify the root cause of the impairment, but they are not substitutes.

Therapists (clinical psychologists) do diagnose. As do psychiatrists. The former also do psychological testing and report writing.
