What did we learn from SARS

Well they’re doing it.

The bigger question is, how will this outbreak impact Chinese exports? What goods will we not be able to get because of this outbreak? Everything already shuts down for the Chinese new year, that impacts shipments. This will disrupt global trade even more so. Will be curious to see how it all plays out.

Probably a lot of TSP millionaires losing that status. The market is gonna be f*****.

“Take travel precautions.”

What does this mean for travel to Asia (not China)?

What about travel to LAX or NYC?

Because you think the lady that does your nails or the guy taking your order from the Chinese restaurant commute from Wuhan rather than say living in Baltimore? You realize most Chinese Americans have never step foot in China, right?

Vietnamese have the nail salons locked down. Korean, Thai and Chinese run the restaurants. The ones I know are first generation immigrants, barely speak English, and visit their home countries at least once every year or two.

Considering the holiday season just ended, it’s a very real possibility that some of them may have just came back from some aort of exposure to this coronavirus, maybe via plane, train, family, etc.

My neighbor was just over there, might still be so. Not sure where in China, but I won’t be attending the HOA meeting if he’s there.

Hubs for international travel. I would avoid if possible.

As Asian American I avoid CNY events even in the US.

They need to quarantine people coming back here from
China until the incubation period is over.

Shouldn't they be at least far away from major population hubs? Just wondering.

Um...do you live in the DMV? Or Atlanta? If so, you too my friend live near a big viral experimental lab. Your friendly NIH scientists who do this work live next door. This virus did not come from a lab, and the world was lucky that China has virologists and scientists of high caliber to help identify and contain it.

Microbiologist here. Do the math yourself: about 54 deaths to 1700 total confirmed cases. Numbers will change almost hourly, but the mortality rate is unlikely to change much unless there is under-reporting of total cases, in which case it will decrease.

Use some common sense, do you put a huge city under quarantine because of 54 deaths and 1700 cases

Microbiologist again.

Definitely. If they hadn't, there wouldn't have been just 54 deaths. This is public health in action. When unexplained deaths start to occur in one location and you suspect a virus, and it's te height of travel season for your citizens to boot, you need to err on the side of caution, ASAP, in case the mortality rate and/or speed of infection is higher than you think. China was heavily criticized for its handling of Avian flu and SARS, and evidently has learned from its mistakes.

The virus is showing up all over China and all over the world. This "quarantine" isn't sensible or helpful.

The quarantine is in cities with 100s of cases not where there are two and they have been quarantine.

The speed with which China is building a new hospital is amazing. Having a command economy coupled with terrific transparency is serving as a model for the world in terms of how to handle this health matter.
