Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

”How about require people wear masks in public places“

Masks don’t protect against everything. Scientists don’t even fully understand this new virus yet. A mask won’t cut it. These infected people, and possible infecteds, need ti be quarantined until doctors understand this virus better, and how it develops and behaves.

Or maybe they shouldn't try to quarantine 35 million people. It's just impossible.

Because you think the lady that does your nails or the guy taking your order from the Chinese restaurant commute from Wuhan rather than say living in Baltimore? You realize most Chinese Americans have never step foot in China, right?

Well they’re doing it.

The bigger question is, how will this outbreak impact Chinese exports? What goods will we not be able to get because of this outbreak? Everything already shuts down for the Chinese new year, that impacts shipments. This will disrupt global trade even more so. Will be curious to see how it all plays out.

OK, you've kept me up way past my bedtime! Last post.

They are building hospitals because the population is rushing to get tested and they are anticipating a surge in infections, predictably, since they estimate that every patient contaminates 2 or 3 others. No country has the capacity to test millions of people's DNA in a short amount of time, so they will triage and hopefully develop an antigen assay for rapid testing. In the meantime, they quarantine. The army will probably deliver food at some point. This is a war zone, not with other humans, but against a virus.

Why would that make more sense than just having trucks deliver food?

It doesn't make sense.

Vietnamese have the nail salons locked down. Korean, Thai and Chinese run the restaurants. The ones I know are first generation immigrants, barely speak English, and visit their home countries at least once every year or two.

Considering the holiday season just ended, it’s a very real possibility that some of them may have just came back from some aort of exposure to this coronavirus, maybe via plane, train, family, etc.

True, you need eye protection as well. Cut the bottom of a water jug off and put it over your head. You will be fine. Don't forget the mask though

Yeah TBH I’d avoid those businesses for a while too bc there is a chance they went back for Chinese NY. The places I frequent are run by the kids of Chinese immigrants — guys I went to high school with who decided to open their own businesses; those guys have literally never been back to China bc their whole families immigrated here or maybe they went back once in high school bc their parents wanted to show them where they came from.

US evacuation flight on Wed from Wuhan. Plane has 230 seats and there’s 1000 Americans in Wuhan so priority goes to diplomats and their families with leftover seats to those most at risk. We really don’t have a military plane?? The kind w cargo seating that is used to deploy 1000+ soldiers in one shot? I’m sure CDC has a plan but I hope there’s some quarantine period not just — go back to your communities, work, grocery stores and public health will call you once a day to ask how you’re feeling — ESP since it isn’t clear yet whether people are contagious only once they have symptoms.

What is the big idea behind having a big viral /experimental labs near huge urban areas like Wuhan?
Shouldn't they be at least far away from major population hubs? Just wondering.
