demoralized in MCPS

I think most higher ups know that teachers have taken a lifetime worth of debt when they believed in the ideals of education. Admin and the union know that they can bully and abuse because of the financial desperation that education itself has caused. They can even pressure these desperate souls into skewing data so the school and princibully look good and get bonuses. This dynamic is not healthy or sustainable. I think the abuse is coming to the public conciousness now and Im going to wait on the sidelines for for progress before returning to this professional dilemma. Teachers must strike silently sometimes by refusing to teach. Many are and the turn over costs the public billions per year.

This was deleted but it is the most important thing to consider when discussing the plight of the modern teacher. It is a breath of fresh air to see a union have competence.

I have a sneaking suspicion that MCEA is behind constantly deleting it but this is what a union is supposed to do! Protect teachers and the profession in general. MCEA acts like they are against teachers except for their money and act like they are free to walk all over teachers rights to dignity, creativity, and a harrassment free workplace. Do your jobs please and quit trying to silence civil discourse when it does not fit you screwed up agenda.

Wow! I have frequently wondered about your mental state, but this time, your paranoia is mind boggling.

Excuse you but this thread is a safe space for professionals who are demoralized with a broken system. It is one of the most pressing issues ever to be in modern education.

If you saw a broken down car would you blame the car or would you blame the people who should have been caring for and maintaining the structural integrity of the car. Pointing out problems I think is meant to fix the car. We can't all pretend that the car is running when it won't even start.

This is the same in MCPS. No student accountability and teachers will be fired due to this epidemic in education and apathetic admin. The one difference is it is nearly impossible to fail anyone or give natural consequences when teachers are pressured to fraud grades

That video deserves to go viral. How appalling. Does anyone know what state / locale this is from? Are ALL of our high schools like this? Even the so-called “best” districts in Bethesda and Potomac?

Teachers aren’t cars. Cars are inanimate objects who have to rely on their owners to take care of them.

Teachers are capable of working both within MCPS and without to effect necessary reforms. I and coworkers are active in the fight to improve working conditions for staff and the learning opportunities for students. We are deeply engaged in that work during our duty day and outside of it. I attended two board meetings in the past couple weeks and actively advocated. Did you? I wrote six letters to elected officials this month. Did you? Teachers (and former MCPS teachers) who chose instead to make anonymous complaints in the internet are not bringing about any changes. They are acting like cars that can not act on their own behalf.

I've helped to remove two principals, a supervisor & another very high-ranking CESC leader. It hasn't made a difference. The system is far too broken. It needs to implode, and I'm getting out before it dies. Screw retirement.

Ah, you are that poster. Please understand that the vast majority of MCPS families have no alternatives to their local public school and their children’s future depends on the system not imploding. Thousands of teachers are working hard every day to prevent the implosion you welcome. Retire now and make room for someone who isn’t eager to press the red button.

Teachers who have been targeted for retaliation who post anonymously have the same valid opinion as someone who enjoys tenure rights. Judge the argument on content instead of bashing free flow of ideas especially against the ones who due to lack of funds and support cant defend themselves. Figure out which team needs support regardless of money and power politics.

This makes no sense? Are you talking about brand new teachers (years 0-3) who have not yet earned tenure? Or former MCPS employees who were fired and can’t find a lawyer who sees enough merit in their case to take it on contingency?

This is actually a thread on demoralization. Look the word up in the dictionary to better understand what the conversation is about please. This attitude like everything is fine is part of the problem. There is a shortage of hundreds of thousands of teachers around the nation because teachers are giving up on a flawed system that is ran by powermongers who want control. If you are a teacher you would understand. If you are a hack in control who couldn't foot the bill as a teacher you do what we see and ignore, blame, deflect, sweep under rug, paint a rosey picture, anything except deal with the root causes of systematic problems. Do you think hundreds of thousands of teachers who devoted their lives to education and quit due to hopelessness are incompetent jerks because they couldn't survive the toxic culture in education. Give me a break. You should be glad people are trying to solve problems instead of ignore.

Tenure has become 3 years of being a yes man and STFU about the issues of grade inflation, violence, bullying, and disrespect in the profession. When you open your mouth to try to do your job you will be a target of harrassment and will never get tenure. Isn't it ironic don't u think.

Heres one. It is of students bullying a teacher and filming it. The Sub does not report it. Why??? Probably because reporting will give you more problems then you started with. Why didn't she call security, more problems. Now do you understand the plight? The unions admit there is a big problem with students and admin bullying teacher. It is well documented and on the record. It is well documented (such as here) that admin don't want to address it. So when I hear this poster say blah blah blah you're not even tenured. I say f off you industry scab and you are a waste of space and you should quit and make room for passionate educators.

THat's a cinch compared to any private-sector job. Teachers are so lucky.

Do you not know the difference between claiming everything is fine and encouraging people to take effective action (rather than acting like it is hopeless)? If you think the only solution is for a public education system is to implode, you are part of the problem.

I’m a mid-career teacher in MCPS. I have always worked for change at the school, system, and state levels. Again, saying a system needs to implode is not trying to solve a problem.

You need help. Call the employee assistance program. Use leave if you need to. The kids deserve better than the attitude you are expressing.
