demoralized in MCPS

Students need rigor and discipline and not failure coddling and teacher bashing if teachers decide to do a good job instead of placating to principals to make numbers look artificially good.

This is so incoherent. I hope parents do not think it represents the average MCPS teacher’s writing skills.

I don't think a teacher wrote that!

Teachers are told how to teach and what to teach now. They are not allowed to discipline kids as parents may have a fit. We do need more academics and to push our kids so they can compete in a global world but look at all the comments here on the early years not being developmentally appropriate (in person nor DL), refusing to make sure classwork and homework is done or even parents expecting kids to keep camera's on. Its easy to blame the teachers but part of this now is on the parents.

Teachers are so stressed they are losing their minds. Time to get out and not look back. So much for working for the betterment of society. It doesn't work if everyone bashes the teachers.

She isn’t a teacher any longer. That’s the axe she keeps returning to this thread to grind.

Now instead of teaching ex teachers are taking on the important task of pointing out the holes in the system that lead to horrible morale, bullying, insecurity, and the problems that arise when we consider the entire system just a system of politics and money passing instead of one that educates students. The teacher shortage and degradation of the profession shows us that we need to solve problems and need to protect teachers instead of treat them poorly. The rubber roomers need to start working to better lives lot just pay lip service when the scandals come out and pretend it was off the radar and no one could have predicted scanda

I don't know this poster and am not a current MCPS employee (I left recently of my own volition). I don't think this poster is well, frankly, and I say that from a place of compassion. Let's all have some empathy and not engage and/or tear her apart. To this PP, I wish you well. I promise you that you won't find what you're seeking in this forum. I hope you're working with a good therapist, because that can help a lot. I'm sorry you had a bad experience and feel you were treated unfairly. That is a terrible feeling.

It's not about this one teacher. It's about a system that can't hold on to teachers due to mismanagement and mistreatment. If the system is built upon politics and burnout it is unsustainable. Let's start taking these teachers seriously when they bring systematic problems to the table. These people are the front line experts are they not?

I wasn't trying to shut down the thread, but rather to stop making it about (or replying to or trashing) that one poster. Of course there are problems. I did leave for a reason!

Maybe things will improve for all teachers with a new Dept of Ed and a teacher as First Lady!

There is something seriously wrong with MCPS at the higher levels. Sup seems more interested in covering up than admitting there are leadership. The first step to problem solving is to identify the problem.

"Seriously wrong"? Challenges, certainly. MoCo isn't the upper middle class commuter county it was 30 years ago.

Of course we have challenges.

Addressing them is (as the geeks say) non-trivial. Whinging is easy. What solutions are you offering?

The rubber room internet trolls are always talking about teachers day drinking. Does that really happen? Are tenured teachers in the rubber room unable to be fire and getting giant salaries while drinking during their work hours? Is that how they get in the rubber room?

It’s not that simple.

Substance abuse can be diagnosed as a manifestation of a medical condition (such as addiction, although I know one teacher who was diagnosed with a chronic pain disorder and another with anxiety.)

IF an employee has addiction (or another medical condition) and IF they are in a treatment, they generally are placed on long term medical leave for 60 days. This leave can be extended if progress is insufficient to return to their duties. If the person is refuses treatment, they will be placed on administrative leave pending a hearing.

Functional alcoholism is an issue in every industry. Day drinking AT school is pretty rare. Sometimes people are in this situation after a DUI, drunk and disorderly, or being intoxicated when they arrive. Not many teachers with vodka in a water bottle. Sorry to disappoint.
