When were you there last? I haven’t been back since the early 1990s, but I thought the neighborhoods around the campus were gorgeous when I was there. Has the area around the campus actually gone to heck, or are bashers just bashing? |
Who are these people picking Tufts over UVa? I need to meet them. |
Parchment has data on which school is chosen by cross admits and it is 75% Tufts and 25% UVA. The 95% confidence interval is Tufts 63.9% to 86.8% and UVA 13.2% to 36.1%. Parchment is based on actual data from high schools. UVA gets most of its applicants from OOS and, while the admit rate is low at about 19%, the yield rate is pretty low as well. This is because UVA OOS costs are pretty much in line with private schools and it may well be offering aid packages with more loans vs grant aid vs. those privates. Tufts has an acceptance rate of only 14%. Its other stats are also quite strong. You are underestimating how well regarded it is in certain circles, particularly in the NE. Most of the cross admits to these schools are going to be OOS applicants. BTW, I wouldn't argue choosing Tufts over UVA if you have in-state tuition. https://www.parchment.com/c/college/tools/college-cross-admit-comparison.php?compare=Tufts+University&with=University+of+Virginia |
I think the bashers have never been there. My niece is at WashU, and we have family in U City. I've been there three times in the last two years. You have to go back if you have not been there since the '90s! You will not believe what the Loop has turned into. It's all really cool restaurants, bars, shops, and concert places now. There is not much hint of anything gritty left, but it is still interesting and fun. Forest Park and all the amazing architecture in the surrounding homes haven't changed. |
Or perhaps have been to a bad part and assume all of it is bad. If you've been to bad parts of Philly and make the same assumption, you'd never go to Penn. If you've been to bad parts of Baltimore and make the same assumption, you'd never go to Hopkins. Ditto Houston and Rice and many other places. WashU is one of the nicest campuses out there. |
I think you are exactly right (and I have a kid at Penn and a goddaughter at Rice, so I know well that these are good examples of outstanding campuses). But who are these posters who have no clue what they are talking about and come in here and trash entire cities or colleges? I hope no one takes them seriously. |
Parchment is one of the most unreliable sources on the web. It is worse than naviance. |
| There’s just nothing redeeming about Wash U’s location. And it’s a pain in the butt to get there. Sorry, St Louis is never coming back. |
Typing New Orleans was in error. But all the kiddos at Tulane seem to be having a blast. Very interesting and booming city. There’s nothing interesting about St Louis. I’m sure there’s enough legacy wealth still there to keep good areas afloat but the entire state is a non entity. |
Do you have another source to refute? |
+1 Yuck. I wouldn’t travel there for the weekend let along send my kid there for four years. There are much better options. |
You have not been there. |
If money doesn’t matter for sure tufts over uva, especially if I was a minority or not conventionally attractive, white, and southern. |
Somehow Tufts gets decent students. Tufts has middle 50% on SAT of 1380-1530 and ACT of 31-34. UVA has middle 50% on SAT of 1330-1500 and ACT of 30-34. |
A ticket from Washington National to St. Louis is about $300, and the campus is somewhat like Yale’s campus. The food is great. Delmar and the Central West End are hip. St. Louis is just not the same as Boston, Chicago or New York, but it’s much cheaper. Non-rich students can probably enjoy what’s available in St. Louis a lot more than they can enjoy what’s available in a place like New York. |
