The upside for kids who want to stay in St. Louis is that housing is super cheap. It's easy for young families to afford a home in a good school district.
It's also the case that the area around WashU is gorgeous and fun. You have Forest Park on one side and the Loop on the other. There are very few campuses I've seen in nicer areas, and we've seen a ton.
When were you there last? I haven’t been back since the early 1990s, but I thought the neighborhoods around the campus were gorgeous when I was there. Has the area around the campus actually gone to heck, or are bashers just bashing?
I think the bashers have never been there. My niece is at WashU, and we have family in U City. I've been there three times in the last two years. You have to go back if you have not been there since the '90s! You will not believe what the Loop has turned into. It's all really cool restaurants, bars, shops, and concert places now. There is not much hint of anything gritty left, but it is still interesting and fun. Forest Park and all the amazing architecture in the surrounding homes haven't changed.
Or perhaps have been to a bad part and assume all of it is bad. If you've been to bad parts of Philly and make the same assumption, you'd never go to Penn. If you've been to bad parts of Baltimore and make the same assumption, you'd never go to Hopkins. Ditto Houston and Rice and many other places. WashU is one of the nicest campuses out there.
