Good thing Israeli citizens of all religions and ethnicities can vote then. |
Can they buy homes wherever they want? “Jewish buyers only” sounds more like apartheid or segregation. Imagine a “Christian buyers only” or “white customers only” sign in the US. Israel is not a democracy. If Palestinians in the West Bank are under Israeli occupation and they pay taxes to Israel, then they should be allowed the right to vote. They aren’t allowed the right to attorney, fair trial, or even the right to farm or get water rights so no, Israel is not a democracy |
If that's your only measure of democracy, then your bar is pretty low. |
And non-Jews have different laws on how they can become citizens. That's democratic to you? |
Exactly, it's a settler colonial project meant to create a religious ethnostate at the expense and elimination of the indigenous Arab population. |
And shitload of discriminatory laws against them |
What’s your solution? Ethnically cleanse the Jews so the Arabs can take back the land? They are not living together in a one state solution. Not without one side oppressing the other in some way. There’s too much hate. |
Again, you’re adding a secular dimension to democracy that doesn’t exist in the definition of the word. It’s not the kind of democracy I would want to live in, because I prefer the separation of church and state, but it is one. I also wouldn’t want to be British where the king heads their church. To each their own. |
And what about Hamas? They don’t allow the minority Christians or other non Muslims to have legal status or worship freely. What do you call that, a religious ethnostate at the expense of non Muslims? |
Democracy is defined by government representatives being elected, not housing laws. Democracy doesn’t necessarily mean a government that looks like America’s with our constitutional protections. |
FYI the one the main reasons why DNA tests are not allowed in Israel is because so many yemeni babies were stolen and DNA tests would reveal this horrific history. |
The utopian one state solution isn’t backed by Israel or Palestinian governments. It also lacks intentional backing for this reason. It’s not happening. |
Most of the indigenous Jewish people converted to Christianity and Islam and trace their ancestry to the Canaanites and represent the modern day Palestinians. They have much stronger claims to being the "chosen people" if you believe in that bullshit. Don't claim your god promised the land to people from Poland and Brooklyn 3000 years ago. |
+1 |
There’s not too much hate. 20% of Israel is Arab. 20% of the West Bank is Israeli. Jerusalem is a mixed city where they literally pray side by side. Jewish and Palestinians Civilians are not killing each other en masse despite the war in Gaza. The idea that they can’t get along is not correct. Most of them just want to live. The problem is the ideologues and extremist violent actors make it harder for everyone |
