It might be because there are tens of thousands of white Hyundai Elantras coast to coast. That could be part of it.

Ugh but not one driven from the area where this horrendous murder took place, that would give me pause especially if my kid was as weird as this kid is being reported as presenting himself. Thank God he didn't harm anyone else (that we know of) while his family buried their heads in the sand. I mean didn't they wondered why he had and apartment and a job and was a student but wasn't going back to school? Come on man.

It must be amazing to be you. Having all the answers, and knowing what you would do in every situation. And knowing exactly what his parents did or didn’t do.

Newest reports suggest he was addicted to heroin, allegedly. He may have been a junkie out of his mind.

He wasn’t a junkie out of his mind. Heroin addiction doesn’t induce psychosis that leads to extreme violence like a random quadruple stabbing.

Any info about him growing up?

seems very normal family, two sisters that are therapists, mom actually posted about tragedy of uvalde and against guns and for mental health resources.
no info on dad
fellow phd student said maybe he seemed socially awkward but nothing stood out.

Where are you seeing this? God his poor family.

+1 Yes. No privacy any longer. Their work addresses and names are out there.

No, the poor families for those four victims. Could care less about his family and no I do not believe for one moment they did not know something was up with this freak show.

PP here. I agree that the parents likely knew something was amiss with him, but often families don't realize the degree of pathology.

What is a parent supposed to do about a child who is weird?

They probably took comfort in the fact that he had been accepted into a graduate program. Hoping that this meant he was finding his way in the world.

+1 It is incredibly difficult for families when loved ones are struggling with mental health issues. There's a strong genetic component, too, that can be frightening for parents and siblings to think about.

There’s often not much families can do without the kid’s cooperation after 18.

True. Our laws need to be changed. Too many people walking aroubd freely when they need monitoring or possibly longterm hospitalization.

PP here. If I knew my friend or son or brother was enrolled in school and lived approximately 10 miles away from the murder scene and also drove a white Hyundai Elantra, it would give me a reason to wonder. I might even think someone had borrowed or stolen it. You wouldn't?

"The University of Idaho has 90 white Hyundai Elantras registered to park at the school, vehicles similar to the one police are seeking in connection with the quadruple homicide just steps off campus, records show."

But not one that mysteriously dissapeared across the country with a grad student who did not return for the rest of Winter break. Kinda stands out, don't you think?

Huh?

Not literally disappeared. He drove the car across the country right after the killings and never went back. That obviously looks suspicious.

He finished out his classes for the semester and went home for winter break, like tens of thousands of other kids from the school.

And if my son had that same car that was being reported in the news, plus knowing he attended school 10 miles away from the murders, I would inform the police.

Correction. Only 8 miles away.

99% betting he's from a highly dysfunctional/abusive family and/or experienced childhood trauma. Mentally ill (pretty much anybody who murders is mentally ill though).

Not condoning the heinous crimes at all, but people keep posting about how they'd do their civic duty and report their kid's white elantra or recognize red flags, etc.

This kid isn't from Ward and June Cleaver.

If this guy is really the killer (have no reason to doubt the cops) he clearly has mental health issues but other someone saying he is socially awkward where is credible information coming from about his behavior/mannerisms?

Heroin mostly makes you fall asleep.

Interviews with classmates former and current.

"Detective, my son drives one of 500+ white Hyundai Elantras in your immediate area and he sometimes wears a weird, sleeveless quilted tunic."

"Ma'am, I think you called earlier. This is a Wendy's."

Not to mention he was functioning as a grad student for the whole semester. Someone from his past mentioned the addiction, it wasn’t clear if he was still involved with drugs.

He went to all of his classes. Not sure where people are getting the idea he left early.

I’m one of the pp’s. I thought I had read that he left in November, but now I’m seeing that he didn’t leave the area until Winter Break (which makes sense if he didn’t want to alert people that something was wrong).

I was actually reading a reddit post from someone that went to school (I think middle school?) with him. The mod team said they were able to verify.
This former classmate said his mom was SO nice. Apparently she worked (or volunteered?) at the school, went to all the school plays and games, etc.
