School board reckoning?

These people, whether at Gatehouse or on the School Board. can't be relieved of their responsibilities soon enough.

How, I’m sure they could upgrade your school and make you happy, but that means not upgrading another school

Or maybe not expanding a school to 3000 seats when a nearby school is under-enrolled, or only spending $100M on a school renovation rather than $140M...

I am *so* excited for the FCHS renovation - having haters say it is undeserved and poor kids should make do with less makes it even more satisfying. My kids got an amazing education and terrific community there, my house was cheap and a great commute into the city, and now my property value will go up with the renovation just as I am getting ready to retire and move.

So your support for this renovation is really motivated by your increase in property value.. Not that there's anything wrong with that..

We are one of those "not so favored" minorities and live in a neighborhood that's on the border between a good school district (which we are in) and not-so-good school district. With one kids already done with HS and another with a couple of years left, the only thing we care about at this point is rezoning and it's impact on my property value.

Politically, we are in the middle but have always voted democrat. The hatred and thinly veiled racism against people like me was obvious in the TJ related discussion boards was an eye-opener. This School Board has to go, even if the replacements are 12 Donald Trump clones. I know dozens of people who, like me, hate DJT, would never dream of voting Republican at the national level, but are dying to do get rid of the current SB. It's going to be a good SB election.

Why? We’re you embarrassed when McAuliffe got votes from blacks even less likely to have college degrees?

Dems only love the “poorly educated” if they vote blue.

Why is it that the Dems think people will run like hell away from public schools if they have the same choice upper middle class and wealthy have to opt out?

Are the public schools not the bestest evarrrr?

Democrats want everyone to get an education.

Because they were voting out of anger, not out of reason.

Reason is subjective. Not your reason - but their reason. That's what politics is about - finding out what matters to the voters. I am a D but Youngkin found it for the majority this time.

If you want changes at the local level, you don’t accomplish that at the state level.

Stop with the lies. The state set the tone with the D-appointed Secretary of Education, Atif Qarni. He will be gone soon, which is fantastic.

It’s not that changes don’t also need to occur at the local level, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Atif Qarni has a deep abiding interest in racial equity given the fabulous life he left behind in a country free of racism and injustice only to become an oppressed minority in a society founded on white supremacy.

Dems want everyone forced to go to government schools that they control, which is why they are so threatened by the idea of vouchers. As long as only the rich (or middle class who can sacrifice enough to scrape up the funds) have a choice in their children’s education, it’s all good.

Yes, I was totally confused by those posts insisting that Ds should have voted for Sears just because she’s black. WTF?

I don't think anyone should vote for anyone because of their color. However, if you look back that was the "push" for some candidates' supporters. And, Ayala's ad that ran repeatedly, over and over, kept stressing that--even though Sears was running against her.

And, Ayala had that phrase that she is an "Afro Latina." Like that was a selling point. There must surely have been another way to present it without being so blatant.

When she said she was Afro Latina I cackled.

Voting against the party that ruined out kids by prioritizing unions, and who are working overtime to indoctrinate school chiodren into compliant little leftists is a very productive and positive way for rational citizens to handle their emotions.

Someone sounds like an extremist and it’s not the leftists lady…

Not either PP. But, the SB did bow to Teachers' Unions. And, they were pushing "equity" and "anti-racism."

Wait. Is anti-racism a bad thing now?

You want to *keep* racist policies?

When math is considered racist, they’ve entirely lost the plot.

Numbers are objective. No one is saying otherwise. (unless you want to get into different numeral systems ).

However, there is a lot that can happen around those numbers - instruction, policies, etc. - that affect outcomes.

The goal is to reduce the disparities in math outcomes. Shouldn't we do that?

The goal is a good education for everyone. Good curriculum, caring competent teachers and admin, etc.
Equalizing outcomes is impossible.

I can’t equalize outcomes among my own children but a school system is supposed to equalize outcomes among every ethnicity/racial group/economic class/family structure?

And by the way males in general are showing signs of faltering academically. Am I supposed to be happy with eliminating the disparity between black and white boys even as white boys decline? My black son can be an under achiever and it’s cool cause Dylan is too?

Yes, I want my tax money to pay for public schools, not subsidize your private school tuition.

By all means. That doesn't prevent me wanting my tax $$ back as school vouchers.. See how that works?

Ok. I want my tax $$ back to hire my own police force. Fire dept. Landscaping for my home. Playground and running track just for my family to use. Etc.

Public funds, contributed by the public, pay for public services. See how that works?

Please. The dems control schools in the south as well? I am scared of vouchers because it takes away funding from public schools and charters are not held to the same standards and have not shown to provide a superior education. If you have data showing otherwise, I would be happy to read it.

Anonymous wrote:The short answer is no. But I certainly hope Youngkin spends most of his political capital fighting CRT in schools. That would be a super productive use of it. Better than, say, saving me a penny in grocery tax on an apple.

I guess if he’s spending months banning something that doesn’t exist, he can’t screw up the rest of the state.

You’re partly correct in saying that it doesn’t exist. Critical Race Theory, by name, is not a part of the official VDOE curriculum. You will not find it in so many words on the VDOE website. What you will find, however, are other references and statements to Equity, Cultural Responsiveness, Inclusion, etc,…all designed to slip it in under the guise of other parts of the left-wing agenda. Some of the larger school districts in Virginia are implementing CRT in the same, surreptitious manner. Fairfax County hired Ibrahim X. Kendi to give a speech to FCPS teachers regarding “anti racism”…and paid him thousands of taxpayer dollars. It also distributed copies of lesson plans based on the 1619 Project to all high school teachers of US History. These are the inconvenient facts that shouldn’t be ignored.
