And the camera operators should be severely reprimanded for those close-ups; yes, the player was eventually revived but they didn't know that would be the outcome.

Agreed. I loved Erikson at Tottenham and never understood why he wanted to leave. I read the rumours about his girlfriend and Vertongen but I think the issue was more likely Vertongen acted like a bully. I noticed in the Amazon show about the team, JV seemed to go out of his way to bully players he didn't think were manly enough. Gross JV. I'm glad he's gone.

Ericksen left, because he wasn't rated by Mourinho. Jose thought Ericksen was too inconsistent and would not defend the way he needed him to. He just wasn't the right player for the system.

Not accurate. Eriksen asked to be traded before Jose became coach.

But Germany also suck and their defense is very shaky and has been for awhile. Philipp Lahm had a unique sense of positioning and football IQ that covered a number of sloppy tactical screwups over the years and Joachim Loew hasn't figured out in 7 years how to get along satisfactorily without him (plus Bastian Schweinsteiger). Compounded by the fact that Manuel Neuer and Mats Hummels are simply getting older. Loew really should have been fired after they failed to make it out of the group stage in 2018. I was shocked the DFB kept him on.

England-Germany will be the team that can't score against the team that can't defend. The match is either going to be hilarious or totally awful.

The problem with Germany is they simply play too slowly. Too purposeful and risk averse on offense. Too much two touch and not enough one touch. Too much lateral and backwards and not enough penetrating. England is a bit similar tactically, but has superior talent and has a much better defense, so they’ve been able to get away with it so far.

Germany need speed in the back. Just one player would help. Their style of play is to cover these deficits. The England manager is struggling mixing the talent. He is way over thinking it....but it’s not like he has a great track record as a manager.

Here are the 16 teams and their match-ups in the first round of the knockouts:

Wales v. Denmark
Italy v. Austria
Netherlands v. Czechia (or Czech Republic, if you must)
Belgium v. Portugal
Croatia v. Spain
France v. Switzerland
England v. Germany
Sweden v. Ukraine

From this round, I'm really looking forward to Belgium/Portugal and England/Germany.

Incidentally, if anyone doesn't have subscription TV, a few of the games are shown on Univision (in Spanish, of course) local channel 14.1.

Also, there's a free app called PrendeTV that we've been using to stream all the games (they've had all the games except the couple of games that Univision broadcasts, so I think there's relationship between the app and Univision). Again, PrendeTV is in Spanish, but for watching the game who cares. It's a good option if you're away from the TV on game day; or if you can connect your phone to your TV you can just watch it that way.

Força Portugal!

A) Fortunately Cristiano already got his goals to solidify his legend and has won two trophies with his country. Messi is still missing.

B) France is stacked AF but they’re very dependent on individualities. They’re not winning.

C) Belgium has now Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne on pins and needles. If they can’t play against Italy they’ll be out.

D) Italy will very likely knock Belgium out - and will most likely lose in semifinals. Who? It’ll be between France/Spain/Croatia/Switzerland.

Italy missing Chiellini showed their weakness. He is still their rock in the back. If he is still out vs. Belgium then I don't see Italy winning. Belgium can win without Eden, but not without De Bruyne.

It’s too bad Portugal didn’t get Bruno and Joao into the game until they were down and there was only about 30-35 minutes left in the game. Their attacking talent is as good as anyone...let them play!

I agree about Joao Felix. He should have been featured in this tournament. Next best thing coming from Portugal. Bruno didn't impress me during the group stage though, so could see why he didn't start this game.

No Messi’s legend is fine. Put Messi on Portugal and Portugal would have won the World Cup but World Cup and national team trophies are in no way an indicator of a player’s greatness.

Messi is an innate talent. But with a huge marketing campaign since he was “rescued” from a country that wouldn’t help with his hormones… the rest is history. Like the 555 million euros he received in the last 4 years with ridiculous after ridiculous embarrassing performances in champions league.

Cristiano has been top scorer in 3 different countries. Won trophies with national country. And did so without the same marketing campaign. Subtle differences you know…

Bruno didn’t have a good tournament, but with the way he has played with Man U since he got there, I still would have put him in there and hope that he eventually would have got it going. No connection to Portugal, but wish they had advanced.

Lol Messi is just all marketing? Maybe you should stay in your lane and go back to watching baseball? Poor little Cristiano if only he had had marketing. Too bad he is done along with Portugal. One win in the Euro. See you later...good luck qualifying for the World Cup.
