Wow. That was quite a game and ending. Not Mbappe's best day.

Agree. My 10 year old was just consoling me by pointing out that he has a World Cup win under his belt, one France wouldn’t have achieved without him. Will give credit to Switzerland and the never say die way they approached this game. The France goals were all unbelievable.

Go Switzerland! On paper they should lose that match 100% of the time and I doubt they'll go further, but what a tenacious, excellent display. First time in 11 tournaments that they have advanced to the QF, and first ever victory from a penalty shootout. And to come back from 3-1 down against France! Fantastic stuff.

We got some really good matches today, even though CRO-ESP didn't go the way I wanted.

Definitely. I really liked how, from the start, Switzerland challenged France...didn’t play scared, didn’t play super conservative, they showed up to play and beat them. The run to draw the penalty was unbelievable. For France, taking Griezmann out was a mistake, imo, since so many of their chances begin with him or Pogba.

Agreed. The drag first touch by benzema on the errant pass and then poke-in was phenomenal agility and instinct.

Exactly. They didn’t turtle or park the bus. It was 120 minutes of open, honest play. Really fun to watch as a neutral. Basically the opposite of Portugal-Belgium yesterday, which had me wanting to bang my head on a wall.

Can’t wait for the travel coaches breaking down France’s loss to “you just gotta want it” 🙄

Anyone notice that the referee for the France-Switzerland game (an Argentinian referee team) interprets "fair challenge" very differently from his European counterparts? The challenge by Pavard on the Swiss player resulting in the penalty... he really needed VAR to make that call? There were players flying in the air like they'd been hit by a car and the ref? Play on. But epic games. Two matches, 15 goals. Coman could have won it but for the bar. Bravo to Switzerland for never saying die and for hitting all their penalties. No one should blame Mbappe as penalties are lotteries but in this game, that was the only way to get a true winner tonight. If only all the remaining matches could be of this caliber.

Every penalty during penalties either had the keeper guess wrong or hit side netting. Sommers did not make an amazing save. It is very much Mbappe’s fault, and, penalties are not lotteries.

France has the names and talent but 1 win in 4 games....plus 1 in GD? Do you look to the manager?

Manager first, and then players second

Here are the 16 teams and their match-ups in the first round of the knockouts:

Wales v. Denmark
Italy v. Austria
Netherlands v. Czechia (or Czech Republic, if you must)
Belgium v. Portugal
Croatia v. Spain
France v. Switzerland
England v. Germany
Sweden v. Ukraine

From this round, I'm really looking forward to Belgium/Portugal and England/Germany.

Incidentally, if anyone doesn't have subscription TV, a few of the games are shown on Univision (in Spanish, of course) local channel 14.1.

Also, there's a free app called PrendeTV that we've been using to stream all the games (they've had all the games except the couple of games that Univision broadcasts, so I think there's relationship between the app and Univision). Again, PrendeTV is in Spanish, but for watching the game who cares. It's a good option if you're away from the TV on game day; or if you can connect your phone to your TV you can just watch it that way.

Força Portugal!

England, Spain, Belgium, Italy and a bunch of underdogs. I am still picking England, but only if their coach wises up.

I think it is between Belgium and Italy. England has not looked good enough on offense. They were lucky to get by the krauts yesterday. I also don’t see Spain making it.
