Hermes Birkin

Invariably these kinds of posts elicit strong reactions. I will ignore further ignorant posts.

I have a closet full of Hermès ties (that I will probably never wear again and will probably end up at a goodwill one day soon). The lovely lady trashing private education and feeling her handbag is a better investment than her children’s education is EXACTLY why I got the popcorn. Just what I expected and it’s disgusting

Hmm. I thought the OP was the ignorant post. Who knew?[/quote

And what part was ignorant?

The ignorant posts I was talking about was people trashing people who spend money on birkins. This thread has gone way off topic.

Seriously. I own a B35 and K25 and also send my kids to private school. One of these is much more of an investment than the other!! The private school money is gone forever...

That is sad you think an expensive purse is a better investment than education.

It's sad that you don't understand that private school tuition isn't an investment at all. It's a luxury good, and one that I can never liquidate. Which is fine, I can afford it for my kids and they're having a good experience, but let's do try to be clear-eyed about it.

I agree with this. Private school is a luxury and often times not an investment at all particularly when it comes to some trust fund kids who don’t care to study and get good grades and go to good schools. There are also plenty of great schools around here where you don’t have to pay a dime. My husband went to Blair and went onto Cornell and then Penn. He is in banking making very good money. Private school can help but it’s not a guarantee.

Maybe you should put them in DCPS instead.

Why? They’re enjoying the luxury experience and I sure appreciate being treated like a client and not like someone in line at the DMV—especially in the pandemic. But it’s very obviously not an “investment.”

Do YOU think private school is an investment? What’s the ROI?

You can’t be serious? You really do not realize all the advantages provided by attending a good private school; social connection, education quality, and the opportunities it provides/opens. What advantages in life does a Birkin provide?

This is what people who spend money on private school or attended private school say but does it REALLY? I went to a top tier private school here years ago and reaped no benefits from social connections. I reaped no benefits going there for my current and past jobs. In fact, sometimes it’s been a bit of a detriment especially in some social circles. People see you as a privileged spoiled brat. There are so many great public schools in this area and private schools your kid has to compete with everyone. The ivy leagues only take a few or a couple of any from each school. Private school if you’re somewhere where the school system isn’t great is understandable but if you live in the burbs around here I think it’s a waste of money. I have plenty of friends who also went to top private schools here and who have kids who went and I see kids and parents who are not well adjusted. They are under incredible amounts of stress and expectations of what life is supposed to be like. And when they don’t achieve goals like a top tier school or job they get extremely depressed. I know several friends whose kids are seeing therapists due to severe depression.

I’m not sending my kids to private school because of “all the advantages.” I do it for the experience. If there are any actual long term advantages, which I am skeptical are real, that would be gravy. But it seems to me it’s just a more coddling and pleasant school experience, both for me as the parent and for my kids as the students. As PPs point out, there are plenty of high quality publics in this area, but my husband went to an elite pressure cooker selective admission school, and we wanted to opt out of the downsides of that experience.

Bottom line, the ROI of private school is iffy. But I’m very sure I could sell my Birkin tomorrow for what I paid if not more.

This is an interesting thread, but I just can’t relate. For me, the brands I like gawking at for handbags are BV, old model LV’s, and vintage Chanels; for clothes it’s Khaite or Nili Lotan. Still expensive, largely unjustifiably so for my actual life. But absent living in and presenting real, unblemished elegance like Gemma Chan in Crazy Rich Asians, the bags just don’t have resonance or placement in contemporary life to my eye. The only “cool” one I’ve ever seen in pictures is Jane Birkin’s actual OG bag, which she put stickers on and stuffed with everything until the seams gave out over many, many years. It’s kind of cool OP is going to use her bag like that, like the original, and not treat it as a museum piece!

She (an artist who has her MFA) raves about the quality of Birkins. And she doesn't work for them anymore so no vested interest. Anyways, she has *wild* stories about how entitled & rude some customers were, as well as genuinely touching stories about some celebrities/regulars who made real connections with the staff. It *definitely* will help you to buy a Birkin to establish a connection with a SA you like.

Thank you. Yes it’s more than just about getting the bag and it’s durability. This bag will mark a milestone for me.

Many, many of my friend's clients came to her when they were experiencing important milestones - it's definitely expected at Hermes & they are looking to help you celebrate in a special, meaningful way (or, at least, my friend certainly was). She's an incredible people person & can connect with just about anyone! Hopefully you will find someone like her who can help you navigate the process. Congrats on your milestone from a random on DCUM!

Such false exclusivity and artificial scarcity. Buy what you want (I have my dumb overpriced purchases as well) but own that the emperor is nude, people. How durable does a purse need to be- It doesn't need to cool a thruster or support a porch.

Just go used, pay way less and maintain actual supportive human relationships with frienids/family so you don't need to pseudo-bond with sa's who could care less. You literally could pay someone off the street WAY less money to pretend to care WAY more than the sa's do on an ongoing basis for the cost of a bag a year.

My MILNis a Hermes scarf collector (has over 400) and gets offered Birkins…she does not carry one but if you spend over $10Knthe offers are frequent. She does not like the Birkin, she has Delvaux bags as her handbag

I have an Evelyne III PM in Taurillon but it's from my mom so I'm not sure of the waitlist, however the quality is excellent. I agree that the Chanel prices are getting ridiculous.
