Hermes Birkin

“Quality” is fine but there’s a limit beyond which additional “quality” is useless and then there’s a limit beyond which additional “quality” is just BS.

Not OP, but I think it depends how much disposable income you have and what you like to spend it on

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that these are also used as financial investments. They hold their value, and can often result in a higher margin if you sell it than many other investments.

I'm not criticizing the effort you're making into getting a treasured item. I've done the same thing myself, but not for a bag or anything haute couture.

So why this bag? Or it's handbag collection you're after, why do you collect bags?

If you knew the quality and history of the Birkin you would understand. I own bags from most of the high end designers and the quality of the Birkin reigns supreme. It’s like the Patek of the handbag world or the sidwell or ncs of private schools in this area in dc mom and dad speak. Why do people go on trips or collect cars or send kids to private school? Everyone has their own reason.

PP you replied to. Oh, I'm sure the quality is impeccable. But like a PP said, shouldn't it also be about whether it suits you? For PP it was a little heavy and unwieldy. Have you tried it on, OP? Or is simply owning such a bag sufficient to make you happy, and you're not that fussed about practical aspects? I practically never buy because I am looking for the trifecta of quality/fitness for me/price, and I'm very picky. It's easy to get 2 out of 3, but I don't buy unless I get 3 out of 3.

That’s a given. Having collected bags for twenty years I look for comfort and durability and weight and how it looks on me foremost. I am very picky as well. I just didn’t like the idea of spending over 10k for a bag but after trying on my sil’s birkins and trying the different sizes she owns I am certain the bag will work for me. I am not seeing this level of quality anymore for Chanel. BV has gotten too trendy and so has Louis Vuitton. I don’t like monogram bags anyway or things with huge logos either.

Do you have young children? I assume not. My sister got a YSL and while I think its a beautiful bag (and cheap compared to a Birkin) I cannot imagine carrying that around with my diaper bag or worse yet using it as my diaper bag!

There are plenty of mothers with small children who carry a Birkin. I have several friends who have children and they carry the 35. People seem to think this bag has to be put on a pedestal. It does not. The reason so many like the bag is it’s durable. Regardless this is off topic. The point of this thread is about acquiring a bag not about justifying one. If you want to ask those questions or comment on that, please start a different thread.

PP you quoted - thats fine - I was just wondering how you can carry a $25,000 bag and have your kids throw their snotty tissues and chewed up food in it. I guess for that price it has to be durable?

It’s only a 25k bag if you go to the reseller market. It’s not that much. Chanel bag and Hermes prices are not that much different these days. Regardless I’m happy to throw in used diapers and other items in the bag since it will have a bag insert. Everyone has a different level of comfort.

BV has gotten “too trendy,” but Birkin has not? Cardi B owns a ton. I think her 4 year old owns one or two, as well. No thanks.

Maybe she just has way more money than you..and doesn’t care what you think 🤷‍♀️

She (an artist who has her MFA) raves about the quality of Birkins. And she doesn't work for them anymore so no vested interest. Anyways, she has *wild* stories about how entitled & rude some customers were, as well as genuinely touching stories about some celebrities/regulars who made real connections with the staff. It *definitely* will help you to buy a Birkin to establish a connection with a SA you like.

Thank you. Yes it’s more than just about getting the bag and it’s durability. This bag will mark a milestone for me.

Yes I have a friend who collects some and never uses them. She has exotics that she wants to resell someday if she needs to. I think one is a croc she bought for somewhere around 50k and she could very well sell it for much more since it’s unused.

Seriously. I own a B35 and K25 and also send my kids to private school. One of these is much more of an investment than the other!! The private school money is gone forever...

That is sad you think an expensive purse is a better investment than education.

These types of “investments” work until they don’t. The bottom can fall out of any market, and then she’s no different from a Beanie Baby border.

It's sad that you don't understand that private school tuition isn't an investment at all. It's a luxury good, and one that I can never liquidate. Which is fine, I can afford it for my kids and they're having a good experience, but let's do try to be clear-eyed about it.

Silly to think that a typical birkin is an investment product. Even the crocs and customised constances/kellys are so common now, unless you have one that’s in a truly hard to find color or leather combination you’ll probably just break even at best.

Maybe you should put them in DCPS instead.
