Good lord, that Brookings report slamming DCUM for racism rears it's head again!

I love this line “When privileged parents choose, they tend to choose segregation.” That includes parents of color as well. It's almost like race has nothing to do with it and it's purely a class issue.

Not exactly. Studies show that white families tend to choose schools that have the largest number of people "like them" and will choose a lower-performing school if it has more white kids. Black families will choose the higher performing school even if it means their child is in a small minority.

Because MCPS is so residentially segregated, schools with higher test scores are richer and whiter. But in DCPS, because of the charter system, you have high performing schools that are majority Black and white parents won't go anywhere near them. They prefer to tell themselves that "their" school doesn't teach to the test, and that's why scores are lower. They can't imagine a world in which a school could be both better and Blacker.

Even in MCPS a schools composite test average isn't reflective of the school's inherent opportunities to learn. It's just an average that tends to favor schools with fewer poor kids.

For example, some might benefit by attending a focus school with smaller classes.

High test scores are pretty reflective of a lack of problems that allow all the kids in that school to flourish. My poor all-white HS in NY was the opposite of this and, if you acted too smart, you got the crap kicked out of you. This is why we avoided low SES schools in MCPS.

That's patently untrue. Just look at all the racial issues at the W's. I get that you want to believe this but it doesn't square with reality.

Also, those schools don't have high test scores just few low ones bringing down their average which is a key difference.

We personally chose to be in TKPK over those areas. We found Takoma more charming and convenient, but we also like the schools.
The CES at PBES was wonderful when my kids went through it. They offer IM math like all other ES in MCPS too.
Blair produces something like 35-40 National Merit Scholars a year. Don't think there's anything else comparable in the county.

We reached the same conclusion. We're actively looking to buy now but that market is very competitive.

"High test scores are pretty reflective of a lack of problems that allow all the kids in that school to flourish". Of course this is true. This is why you want busing and we don't. You want to get rid of a lot of the problem kids in your school and replace then with our kids who are less disruptive.

There aren't schools with high test scores in MCPS just a few with far less than their share of FARMS students. This doesn't make one school better. The same kid would do exactly the same at either a low or FARMS school.

Yes, Blair also has 10X the National Merit Finalists, Regeneron Scholarships than the other HS. It's head and shoulders over those other schools.

Then why do east county progressives want busing so badly?

It has a magnet program so it should be better. I doubt the aforementioned folks are in genpop though.

Agree it is hands down the best school in the etire state and the most diverse to boot. This makes the W parents crazy and is #1 the cause of Blair envy.

Wonderful. If you love it so much then you can keep it. Therefore I hope you will join us in telling the BOE that no one in MoCo wants busing.

It'll be even more diverse when it is integrated with western PG County high schools.

Our kids went there and loved it. Our oldest is at Cal Tech and youngest is now at Princeton.

That is the magnet.
