Same here — part of the reason we moved here. TP is incredibly convenient to downtown DC. |
There are a lot of terrible things about Takoma Park (people there supported secession back in the 90s and don't support school integration today) but the commute to DC isn't one of them. |
I’ll bite. I have only lived here a couple of years so can’t be blamed for “secession” - though I think what you’re talking about is when MoCo absorbed the PG part of the city? Which is the opposite of secession. But what school integration is it that you keep banging on about? 1) our schools are diverse - look at the stats and 2) or schools are HUGE - there are 8-10 classes per grade level, where exactly are we expected to “integrate” with? Who do you think should be going to TKPK schools who is not currently? Why is this something you are repeatedly bringing up about TKPK but not anywhere else? BTW, Piney Branch is a focus school, so not exactly exclusive, wealthy or high achieving. |

I’ll bite. I have only lived here a couple of years so can’t be blamed for “secession” - though I think what you’re talking about is when MoCo absorbed the PG part of the city? Which is the opposite of secession. You must be new around here. Predominantly white Takoma Park neighborhoods seceded from predominantly black PG County. "Marc Elrich, a Takoma Park City Council member and a schoolteacher in Montgomery, still can't see why anyone would be pining for Prince George's. "I would have died if people in Montgomery County had voted to move to Prince George's," Elrich said. "There is a perceived difference that Montgomery County has better schools, better services and higher property values." But what school integration is it that you keep banging on about? 1) our schools are diverse East county progressives claim that MCPS is segregated and are encouraging the BOE to start busing kids from east lower SES schools to higher SES schools and vice versa. look at the stats and 2) or schools are HUGE - there are 8-10 classes per grade level, where exactly are we expected to “integrate” with? The PG County schools that Takoma Park left when it seceded. Who do you think should be going to TKPK schools who is not currently? All the children in that area, regardless of the county they live in. MD law allows for this. Why is this something you are repeatedly bringing up about TKPK but not anywhere else? BTW, Piney Branch is a focus school, so not exactly exclusive, wealthy or high achieving. Because east county progressives are the ones who want busing to increase diversity. But the way the define diversity is hypocritical. When they sway "increase diversity", they mean bringing wealthier white and Asian kids to their schools and sending poorer black and brown kids away from their schools. They shriek in horror at the thought of bringing in really poor kids from PG county though. Almost everyone else in the county would prefer to stay in their current school or, perhaps, move to a closer school. The BOE changed the boundary policy back in 2018 and made diversity the top priority though. So it will be nearly impossible to move kids to schools closer to home. |
You’re talking about something that happened in the 90s. This is ancient history. It is completely irrelevant to any of this discussion and frankly weird that you are derailing this thread about. Also Wtf is “the area”. So strange that you have this ancient axe to grind. |
Damn. Fed the troll...

"Secession" is a bizarre way to refer to a city's residents voting to have their city be contained fully within a single county, rather than be split across two. Two-thirds of the residents were already living within in MoCo in the first place.

| I think the point everyone understands is that Takoma Park and the politics that emanate from Takoma Park reek of FOS hypocrites. |
Seriously. It's 100% possible to ignore this person. They're not going to change their mind or say anything interesting or do anything other than tell the same story about "secession" and "East County Progressives." No matter what you think about the issues being raised (and I'm fine with cross county busing if people in PG want it), there's no need to give a troll attention. |
"Everyone"? |
Please don't feed the troll!

It's intercounty busing, not cross county busing. The distances wouldn't be more than a mile or two. And if you're a real progressive you should be more than fine with it. You should actively support it and contact the MCPS BOE to tell them this is what you want. Live your values. |
Secession is a wrong that was never righted. It is a blight on Takoma Park. So it is completely relevant to a discussion about school integration. If you're not kidding and are really this racist and backward thinking, perhaps you should move to Damascus or maybe even Frederick. |
