Not exactly. Studies show that white families tend to choose schools that have the largest number of people "like them" and will choose a lower-performing school if it has more white kids. Black families will choose the higher performing school even if it means their child is in a small minority.

Because MCPS is so residentially segregated, schools with higher test scores are richer and whiter. But in DCPS, because of the charter system, you have high performing schools that are majority Black and white parents won't go anywhere near them. They prefer to tell themselves that "their" school doesn't teach to the test, and that's why scores are lower. They can't imagine a world in which a school could be both better and Blacker. [/quote]

Even in MCPS a schools composite test average isn't reflective of the school's inherent opportunities to learn. It's just an average that tends to favor schools with fewer poor kids.

High test scores are pretty reflective of a lack of problems that allow all the kids in that school to flourish.  My poor all-white HS in NY was the opposite of this and, if you acted too smart, you got the crap kicked out of you.  This is why we avoided low SES schools in MCPS.[/quote]

You want to get rid of a lot of the problem kids in your school and replace then with our kids who are less disruptive.[/quote]

There aren't schools with high test scores in MCPS just a few with far less than their share of FARMS students. This doesn't make one school better. The same kid would do exactly the same at either a low or FARMS school. [/quote]
