Where did your 1380/1400 SAT score and high gpa (mcps) kid get in this year?

Did they submit scores?

Yes. He also was considering Davidson, Georgetown, Middlebury, and he would not have submitted his scores for those schools but he did for UVA and Wooster.

Attending UMD in fall.

Nice! Thanks for sharing. Its good to know 1400SAT range kids have good options!

You make it sound like 1400SAT kids are not still the cream of the crop - of course they have good options!!!

I didn’t mean to make it sounds like that. Its hard when you are surrounded by kids and parents who think only a score of 1500 plus is acceptable and worthy for applying to your state flagships or even some selective schools. My DD knows girls who complained that they only got a 1560 and have to take the SAT again. Then you hear of high stats TJ kids getting rejected from their state flagships and you wonder what will become of my Kid who has a 1400.

That's why DCUM pretty much sucks - it makes you feel like crap because people generally only post here to brag, whether they think they are or not. Stay off DCUM and you'll feel better.

I’m the one with the kid and didn’t take it that way at all. I agree that it seems reading DCURBANMOM that you need crazy high scores to get in anywhere. The problem is people posting in this forum are probably more likely than not parents with kids who are high flyers - though are considered average among their peers. I’m really proud of my Ds 1370- as a senior in CoVID she could only take it once. I would have never gotten her score and I have a pretty good life .

At lot of it is based on school, too. One of the advantages of going to a lesser public school is you differentiate yourself from rest of student body.

My DC got into Franklin and Marshall with 1,300 SAT. Mostly IB classes but not IB diploma.

Yes and no. It obviously not nothing but I think some people are thinking their 1250s back in the day would be 1500s now which isn’t true.

So anyway to know what they would be?

Don’t downplay what they’ve got- they’re in great shape and will get in lots of places! Stay off the DCUM-pipe and remain positive about your kid. They’re great, you’re great. (1440 kid with a high GPA who was *thrilled* with her score and never considered retesting and who got into lots of smaller LACs with great merit aid- 50k at one place! There is definitely hope for your DC and be proud of them!!)

Please do share which small LAC awarded 50k in merit. Was this Roanoke?

Would you mind saying how much Merit Aid from Dickinson? I have a sophomore who is interested but yikes the price tag.

Totally agree. Is it that the scoring is somehow different, so more kids obtain a 1300/1400+ score, or is it that kids have had increasingly better test preparation? Probably a combination of both.

Tests are way frigg'n easier today than 20-30 years ago. For one, they removed the gat dang analogies and all highly arcane vocabulary from what used to be called the SAT-Verbal when it was actually hard.

Removing arcane words and deciding to focus on more meaningful standards doesn't make it easier.

It seems a lot easier to prep for the test and basically game the system. 1400 could get you into any school not so long ago. Now you've got to get as close to 1600 as possible. Insane. And it's a stupid test. It doesn't measure creativity or analytical thinking, for starters. It should disappear.

My kid got $1500. Ridiculous. She was so disappointed because she loved Dickinson, and she is a high stats kid. She went to our state flagship.

Congratulations to your DC! There are great options. I went to URichmond and have several friends whose kids are there now.

Mind sharing what merit aid U of Richmond offered? Our DC has an interest and similar GPA, SAT above 1500, but money is tight for us. We can afford in state tuition but not privates unless they offer enough merit aid. Thanks.

This has a chart:

https://www.greenes.com/html/convert.htm

What is a SAT Conversion Chart?

In 1996, the Educational Testing Service simplified the SAT. The overall effect was to raise the average combined score. On the high end, a verbal score of 730 on the old scale is now awarded a perfect 800 and a math score of 780 on the old scale is now scored as 800. What that means is that a test that would have garnered a 1510 on the old test can now be awarded a perfect 1600.

PP here. Sorry, I forgot to mention not MCPS. 3.4Uw, 4.0W (3 AP, 8 DE). Submitted 1420 SAT score.

Thanks- Whats DE? Public or private school?

Public. DE is dual enrollment (community college classes). The GPA was at time of application (so after Jr year). DE courses don't get weighted. Normal ECs. Friends with similar stats had similar admission results. Got 5k per year merit awards at schools other than Maryland.

Thank you! Sounds great! Congratulations to you and your kid

Thank you. Does your son have an intended major?

No. As of now he is all over the place.

IF he isn't sure, applying for a program at Maryland that isn't limited enrollment would probably increase his chances for fall admission.Good luck. If he would consider a small school, I really liked SMCM.

This is not true. Applying for an LEP does not make getting into Maryland any harder. Kids are first admitted into Maryland and only then are they considered for admission into the LEP for which they applied. Your son didn’t get in for regular admission because his GPA wasn’t high enough. I have been through this process many times at Maryland so I know.

What do you think between UMD and Pitt?

UMD if from Maryland and Pitt if from PA. Both are great schools... UMD is probably considered a higher ranked school but not enough to make a difference educationally or for gaining employment after graduation. I wouldn’t pay out of state for either.
