Those students can get into nearly any college. Stop being dramatic.

Congratulations to your DC! There are great options. I went to URichmond and have several friends whose kids are there now.

OP congrats to your kid for a great SAT score and a Gpa that reflects hard work and persistence. Don’t downplay what they’ve got- they’re in great shape and will get in lots of places! Stay off the DCUM-pipe and remain positive about your kid. They’re great, you’re great. (1440 kid with a high GPA who was *thrilled* with her score and never considered retesting and who got into lots of smaller LACs with great merit aid- 50k at one place! There is definitely hope for your DC and be proud of them!!)

I would say that if you are in-state and applying to an LEP, Freshman Connection might be the most likely result.

Also into UMBC, Salisbury, SMCM.

Pp, is your son a student in mcps? And what was his gpa and general level of classes?

I am in shock that a strong gpa and a 1400 does not get one into UMDCP. - parent of a younger high schooler

Not MCPS, but in-state. Unweighted GPA was around a 3.4/3.5 with 3 APs and 4 dual enrollment classes at the time of application (8 total) (plus an engineering course). Again, the planned major was Computer Science which is an LEP.

UMD Scholars Program

Clemson
Florida
South Carolina
Marquette

Attending UMD in fall.

Nice! Thanks for sharing. Its good to know 1400SAT range kids have good options!

You make it sound like 1400SAT kids are not still the cream of the crop - of course they have good options!!!

Your son sounds like a great student! Thanks for this information. Do you know if one can still graduate in 4 years if admitted via Freshman Connection?

Yes. The AP and DE classes can help with this, but you can take general ed and some core classes for your major during the fall. You just have to pick classes offered for Freshman Connection, which are mostly offered in the late afternoon or evening.

I didn’t mean to make it sounds like that. Its hard when you are surrounded by kids and parents who think only a score of 1500 plus is acceptable and worthy for applying to your state flagships or even some selective schools. My DD knows girls who complained that they only got a 1560 and have to take the SAT again. Then you hear of high stats TJ kids getting rejected from their state flagships and you wonder what will become of my Kid who has a 1400.

Totally agree. Is it that the scoring is somehow different, so more kids obtain a 1300/1400+ score, or is it that kids have had increasingly better test preparation? Probably a combination of both.

Tests are way frigg'n easier today than 20-30 years ago. For one, they removed the gat dang analogies and all highly arcane vocabulary from what used to be called the SAT-Verbal when it was actually hard.

Removing arcane words and deciding to focus on more meaningful standards doesn't make it easier.

Removing the arcane words dramatically increases the test’s bias in favor of wealthy kids. The old tests were much fairer. Studies have shown that re-scoring SATs to eliminate easy questions reduces the racial and income gaps in outcomes.

New tests are worse in every way.

Yes and no. It obviously not nothing but I think some people are thinking their 1250s back in the day would be 1500s now which isn’t true.

What would my 1360 back in 1984 be today?

And I was so uninformed that I didn't realize you could retake the test and combine your highest scores.
