| Did you send in the scores? My kid is hoping for UMD. Not aiming for selective schools. Just wondering what to expect for my rising senior at an MCPS high school. Be kind. Thanks |

Mine got into Maryland, for spring admission (Letters and Sciences). He can start in the fall, but will have to take afternoon classes and the gateway courses for his major (CS). I would say that if you are in-state and applying to an LEP, Freshman Connection might be the most likely result.
Also into UMBC, Salisbury, SMCM. |
| Wow in my day (I'm old!) that would would be going T20! |
| Thank you for the reply. Did your DC submit the scores? What was their GPA? |
PP here. Sorry, I forgot to mention not MCPS. 3.4Uw, 4.0W (3 AP, 8 DE). Submitted 1420 SAT score. |
Thanks- Whats DE? Public or private school? |
Totally agree. Is it that the scoring is somehow different, so more kids obtain a 1300/1400+ score, or is it that kids have had increasingly better test preparation? Probably a combination of both. |
Public. DE is dual enrollment (community college classes). The GPA was at time of application (so after Jr year). DE courses don't get weighted. Normal ECs. Friends with similar stats had similar admission results. Got 5k per year merit awards at schools other than Maryland. |
Thank you! Sounds great! Congratulations to you and your kid |
Sorry - I forgot to say public school. I do wonder if schools recalculate GPAs in a way that comes out better for non-MCPSS students, because based on this forum, I was worried about my son's stats when we were applying. Honors courses get .5 bump, not the full point that MCPSS gets, DE get no bump. |
Thank you. Does your son have an intended major? |
No. As of now he is all over the place. |
IF he isn't sure, applying for a program at Maryland that isn't limited enrollment would probably increase his chances for fall admission. Good luck. If he would consider a small school, I really liked SMCM. |
Thanks! |

My MCPS graduating senior had a 31 ACT and 3.8UW/4.4W (or somewhere around there - I can never remember his GPA).
He got into UMD (fall admit, letters and sciences - I think he applied undecided), UMBC (merit), and University of Washington (merit). Deferred EA at Northeastern, and I'm not sure what the RD outcome was. TBH, I'm not sure he's checked (he's been....laid back about the whole process). |
