Brother in law and His girlfriend proclaim DH’s family racist this on social media.

People on this thread are nuts. Maybe the tiger king is a racist but it’s not like that’s his primary claim to fame and why people are choosing to dress up like (mock) him. He’s famous for being a crazy loon who kept tigers in captivity, got in a feud with another tiger obsessed person and made a music video about her feeding her husband to a tiger. Amidst all the crazy I doubt the racist comments were even on most people’s radar. These are probably the same people who would say kids shouldn’t dress up like George Washington for a history project because it’s promoting slavery.

Didn’t mean to post and run-had to work.

No Confederate flags! This is what irks me. This side of the family is extremely progressive. We are all social justice advocates. No one in the family is a Trumper or even a conservative. No one has made racial comments about anything it was simply the tiger King costume and my silence in explaining it. Also, the fact that nobody wanted to engage in large conversations over text about racial injustice. Frankly, they have no kids they have jobs as starving artists. They never ask anything about the family beyond wanting to talk race . The rest of the family have kids have lost jobs and are trying to see our way through a pandemic. Yes social justice and racial injustice are important but it is not our 24 hour gig as it is their’s.

I don’t believe anybody has ever made a comment to her about anything offensive but then again I am not her and I don’t walk in her shoes so I understand this part now. It’s been hard though to see the shaming of a family when I don’t think that it is justified. Again though I guess it’s not up to me to determine if it is justified or not. The costume consisted of a Hawaiian shirt and a blond mullet wig. I dressed as the Carol lady with a floral crown. Yes, we are all white.

So, if all I saw was the documentary, and not any of the stuff on social media, I wouldn't know that he used this kind of language? So I might not be aware that he was such a racist? Would I still be racist if I dressed up like him, not knowing about the rants and offensive language?

Like, instead of saying that OP is racist, why not point out, "Hey, you might not know this, but JE uses really graphic, offensive, and racist language. They cut it out of the documentary, but there are lots of videos of him saying truly awful things." Then OP and her husband, if they are normal, decent people, would say, "Oh, wow, no, I didn't know. We definitely won't be dressing up like him again! Thanks for telling us; I think we'll take down the photo." Instead of "He's racist, so you're racist."

OP's first post said that SIL wrote that 'it' was racist (not that OP/DH were racist). OP was silent and then left the text thread. My guess is that there was plenty of opportunity for OP and her husband to say "Oh, wow, no, I didn't know. We definitely won't be dressing up like him again! Thanks for telling us; I think we'll take down the photo" to solve the problem. In fact, it's still ok to say that!

DP. Puh-lease. It's on SIL to elaborate on why "it" was racist. David Duke is known for being a racist. The Tiger King is not. Rather than wallowing in outrage, SIL should have enlightened people.

Op again-I will apologize to her but I truly didn’t dress up like tiger king and Carol to promote racist views. It was a pop culture thing and we had the stuff in our closet so it was an easy outfit. Halloween really should be banned.

That's what I thought, too, and I don't get how that's racist. The characters in that documentary are white, and they are clearly identifiable people. It's not like dressing up like some ethnic stereotype (a geisha, a gangster, etc.). It's dressing up like a famous couple.

Since when is a gangster 'an ethnic stereotype'? What ethnicity are gangsters, exactly?

I'm sorry, OP. This whole thing is ridiculous beyond belief.
I guess people who are looking to get offended will always find an excuse to do so.

Honestly they sound exhausting to be around and it seems like most of the extended family agrees. I would just stop engaging with them.

While it is true that gangsters can belong to many ethnicities, there were/are white people who would dress up like black gang members.

"Pimps and hos parties" also used to be a thing (I don't know if they still are), and that also invited white people to dress like black "ghetto" stereotypes.

I’ll keep Halloween, thanks. If you’re that sensitive to criticism by people with extreme points of view you could always just stop posting on Facebook.

Wait, what? How was it obvious by wearing a mullet wig I was trying to hurt my sil???

Please enlighten us as to how on earth the OP is racist.

OP, this is why social media is so toxic. The good news is that she and BIL are exposing themselves for the idiots they are. You don't need to say a word. Just let it all play out. The more they post, the more people see they're ridiculous.

I'm part Japanese. I have no problem with geisha costumes or any other depiction of Asian people at Halloween. Some microaggressions can be really burdensome, but this isn't one of them.

I posted links above! They dressed up as a confirmed racist. Caught on film, you can see it all over YouTube. Would you dress as a person that is known for hate speech towards Japanese people?

At a costume party, possibly! You realize that most historical figures were racist and/or misogynist? Japanese leaders were also racist and responsible for terrible acts of murder and cruelty.

Again, it's just costume.

OP, it is obvious your intent was to hurt your sister-in-law's feeling by wearing this costume. It wasn't simple tiger costume. You also topped it off with a "blond mullet wig". Shame on you for remaining silent when she expressed her hurt feelings in the text. You don't need to wear a white trash costume. You are white trash.
