I wonder if the same will happen at Ivies and others this year - reduced space due to admitted 2020 student deferrals, along with increased apps at these schools due to kids who stayed home from other schools and those who are applying test optional giving it a try . |
I disagree to everyone outside of this area the DMV is the Department of Motor Vehicles. |
Now I am wondering what District Maryland Virginia locals call the Department of Motor Vehicles, if not DMV. And if DMV, how do the locals distinguish DMV 1 from DMV 2? It’s one of those mysteries of life the enquiring minds need to know. |
If you can’t figure this out from context, then I despair for your ability to function in the world. |
Of course it will. Seniors and their families were smart to have multiple Plan B's thos year, and not to take any admissions for granted. Our Plan B worked out great, but looking at less lucky families I think we were reckless to only apply to 2 state flagships (got honors + acholarships at both). It would have been smarter to apply more widely on that level. My child did not apply to MIT, but her best friend at Blair Magnet was first deferred and then rejected. Waiting for Plan A in April. |

My daughter was accepted to MIT on Sunday night. Smart girl but more of a hard worker than just brilliant, she is involved in few school activities but focuses heavily on what she does do. Not many AP classes.
The irony is she didn't get all caught up in the college pressure game. She did take practice test for ACT, took it once in 10th grade and submitted scores (34). Never took SAT but did well for (commended) award on PSAT. We never paid for tutoring and have zero connections. She is female, white, stem hopeful but not first gen or any other factors (except female may have helped). Not a poor family but not super wealthy. Our home is 1300 square feet in a wealthy suburb to give you an idea of income. Honestly, no idea why she was selected over some of the others. Maybe being genuine was a boost. Her essays were fine but not near the quality of some students. They weren't super polished. I was more shocked than her. I always assumed you had to have cured cancer to get in. |
Congrats to your daughter! What kind of ECs? DO they relate to planned major? Also, does her school not offer APs? Assuming VA or private? |
That is so not true. I first heard "DMV" when I started listening to local sports talk radio almost 30 years ago. I had only heard local African Americans use it until a few years ago. Now everyone uses it. |

Anybody who raised kids playing sports --- especially basketball --- in this area knows that everybody -- players, coaches, media -- talks about DMV sports. For basketball specificallly, this is because DC, PG county and NOVA collectively have several of the best high school teams in the country (Paul IV in Chantilly, DeMatha in Hyattsville, St. John's, Gonzaga, Wilson and maybe Sidwell in DC). A prominent Web site that covers these and other local teams is DMVElite.com. NBC Sports publishes the DMV Top 20. PrepGirlsHoops publishes the DMV Power Rankings. The nationally famous DC Assault club (now DC Premier) where NBA players like Michael Beasley, Rodney White and Keith Bogans played has a tag line "renowned nationally, iconic in the DMV." The notion that DMV is something "only used by transplants" sounds like something invented by the kind of people who live in Bethesda and say they are from DC. |
Congrats! I am sure your daughter is outstanding in her own way. Is she in DC/Maryland/Virginia area? |
So basically white people who use it are poseurs. |
I judge anyone who doesn't call it "DCA". |

Pp whose daughter was accepted here:
Private school is reason for few AP classes. I am probably talking her down because I read these boards and (wrongly) have compared her to the kids on here. Plus, her friends have been pressured about college for years and we really tried to stay away from that. Based on her ACT score with few hours prep and grades in classes, she is intelligent. She just isn't one of these TJ kids I read about or science Olympiad winners. Her EC are mostly yearbook. Junior editor last year and now editor. She spends too much time on it. She has tried various sports but was never that great. But, to her credit, she did put herself out there by trying many. She is interested in hiking, math, and graphic design. Plan is degree in engineering and some architecture courses. Maybe they focused more on the holistic process this year. She will do well because she is a hard worker. Assume her teacher recommendations were powerful. Although I have told people, she has kept the news quiet. |
I think girls have a leg up when applying for engineering. My DD was accepted UVA engineering ED as Rodman scholar. Her brother's stats were better and also got in ED 3 years ago, but was not selected as Rodman. |
