When do you think in-person 5 day a week school will return?

No. The vaccine roll-out is a mess. Even with teachers given priority it will take a while for them to be vaccinated. Some will wait to see which vaccines are more likely to give people reactions and decide accordingly which to get. There are new strains of Covid which the vaccines may not cover that can be deadly and cause severe impairment. That alone will make people take pause. Maybe hybrid in the fall, if the general population keeps up with restrictions and our numbers go back down. If not, it will be DL.

No need to shoot the messenger by the way. I was saying we would not be back in the Fall this year and got shot down. I said middle and highschool would not make it back this winter and was shot down. This is my prediction. You can argue all you want, but only time will tell if I am right.

That said, we all have a personal responsibility. I do think there might have been a chance of hybrid this year if people had followed guidelines, but after Thanksgiving and Christmas numbers exploded so much from all the people who ignord guidelines.

Teachers & students 16+ choosing to be vaccinated will be vaccinated
Everyone will still need to wear masks
Social distancing when able, particularly if masks are off (lunch)
I think bussing students could resume

All kids need to be 5-days in-person to help stop the learning loss the FCPS school board has perpetuated these past 10 months and counting...

I have friends who are all over the US, and a few are actually on their local school board. Nobody is sitting around laughing at FCPS. They are too busy dealing with their own quarantines, closings and opposing factions. I know the #openfcps are desperate to bully the SB and teachers into opening regardless of the percent positive cases in the area, but it's is absolutely ridiculous to imply anyone has time to pick apart what FCPS is doing. They are taking a cursory look at other school systems and superintendents across the nation do touch base with eachother. This is an extremely complicated issue around the world and it is simplistic to say "well in Alabama they did and it worked great" without actually knowing the ins and outs, number of quarantines, impact on teachers, and so forth.

Yes, everyone who was selfish enough to go somewhere over the holidays will push this back further. At this point, I think they might be able to come back for hybrid in Jan 2022. There's no way they will be in schools in 2021. It's not safe and it won't be even after some teachers are vaccinated. Community spread will still be too high and the danger will still be too great.

I am concerned we will only start hybrid. If kids aren’t vaccinated will they need to be vaccinated? Can we do full capacity busses, hallways in MS & HS, and cafeterias and full capacity if kids aren’t vaccinated?

We know virtual will be offered and I am guessing that means concurrent instruction will need to be used.

Additionally my MIL is being treated with cancer and unable to get the coronavirus vaccine. Idk how many adults will be unable or unwilling to get the vaccine and whether that will affect the fall.

This is a tough post. Not sure who started this thread but we need a breather. We should table our discussion of this 60 days. The cases and data trends will look differently on 3/8 than they do on 1/8 (hopefully!). It's hard to discuss this with the school board reacting to the spike right now which I know clouds us thinking about the Fall.

I've been hearing experts discuss the fact that this *should* be the final spike in cases and spread. And I am optimistic that the vaccine roll out will pick up over the next 15-45 days.

So while it's hard not to be overwhelmed right now and know many of us have to plan now for the fall. But let's take a step back, take a breather, and pull back up in two months.

Signed by someone who would send her kids back to school now!!

I know this is literally giving me high blood pressure to think about the fall being different too. I have this doomsday feeling that public education is over as I know it ugh!!! I’m also kicking myself because one of my kids is in private and one in public. The one in public was accepted to a good private but decided to stay with public.

Nonsense. Teachers cried and protested with baby coffins about working in August when the case numbers were incredibly low. They are going to milk this as long as they can by promoting false rumors about the efficacy of the vaccine (no evidence it does NOT work on the new strains, no evidence it does NOT prevent transmission).

Next year? By the public school systems? Its impossible. They can't staff it.

I read a few articles where medical experts are suggesting that social distancing will still be necessary even after one receives the vaccine. I don’t think our country has the wherewithal to do that. There seems to be a feeling that one can mingle like it’s 2019 after getting the shot.

This. My 85 year old mil bought plain tickets to come visit in April. She will have received both doses of the vaccine by March, so will be fully vaccinated. But I was shocked— I was trying to tell her that she still needs to wear a mask if she is in our home (especially since it’s only a one week trip), and she flipped out on me. The vaccine only prevents severe disease. You can still get sick.

Evidence of this?

FCPS has already said it will be offered.

Not the PP, but this is common knowledge. You can still get Covid, but it makes it much less likely you will end up in the hospital or die. That is reasonable.

I believe brabrand said it at the 1/5 meeting.

The reason I don’t think the discussion can wait is if people are going to apply for private school. That said we are all just guessing.
