Why will get they collective bargaining power this summer? |
The teachers union most vocal advocates of keeping schools closed until it's safe (defined as 0 cases in 14 days.. as though the flu has that statistic!) are- gasp- young 20-30 year olds who don't want to go back and work from home. These young teachers have no older family members living with them- take vacations to Puerto Rico for example- they just got a easy way out of working hard. This age range is what we see here locally protesting. They are the least vulnerable group but clearly have other agendas. If you want to be open about what is going on- I'd really recommend joining FB groups and going on twitter. I am surprised how few of my friends know the disastrous details of what is going on.. definitely watch an FCPS school board meeting (even recorded if you can't watch when they meet for 6 useless hours). https://www.rt.com/usa/511362-teacher-union-caribbean-holiday-school-closed/ |
Well, I’m out. |
There are still a lot of steps before that happens. Teachers will gain the right in VA to collectively bargain, but the majority of staff first have to say they want bargaining and representation, the school board has to agree to it, and then the staff has to select which group will represent them. |
| My SIL is a physician in Charlottesville. She predicts we will still be social distancing through late next fall and that 5-day/week school is not guaranteed. Not fun. |
I disagree. Teachers will be vaccinated by fall. I think they will offer a virtual option but 5 days of school for everyone else. I will say I think virtual would be separate and not tied to base school. I am a teacher and would be pissed if we were staying home and vaccinated. |
| Fall 2022. |
Some are arguing that if kids are not vaccinated then they have to maintain social distancing, which means hybrid school. |
| Jan 2022, and we won't have 5 days again. The price of getting teachers back in schools with be a 4 day workweek. |
On what grounds is the union demanding a 4 day week? |
To be fair, they will call Mondays planning days, but will be allowed to WFH. They don't need grounds. They will threaten and the board will submit. |
| We have a friend in Germany. Family quarantined because of a case in kid’s class and they are serious about the quarantine there. They had multiple rounds of tests, 3 of the 5 of them got it in succession so clearly from each other (though they wore masks in their house) - but none ever had any symptoms. Absolutely none. Would have never known. I’ve lost faith that life will be “normal” for a few years, yet. Maybe normalish before that, but masks and distancing for a long time. |
| +1 Fall 2022. |
many people are still saying that social distancing is going to be a requirement, so that means hybrid or concurrent. |
