That is exactly what isn't fair. You have some kids who attend all and cannot seem to move up and kids like yours who barely attend taking up space. They should cut those kids who don't attend the majority of the sessions. You shouldn't be holding a spot if you only swim 1-2 days out of 4 a week. RMSC dominates the county pools so others aren't allowed to use it. They don't pay for the pool time or life guards. They should allow other teams to also use the pools. |
We are at KSAC too and have no idea what's going on. Our practices were small but they had two overlapping groups so that may be the issue. We only had 2-3 kids generally per lane. The plan was for up to 4 kids but thankfully they were able to keep numbers low. |
Kids need to practice but there was never any discussions of meets so that's a non-issue. There is no where else to even just swim outside of team, so its an issue. |
"Fair" is not 50 minutes a week for some groups and 2.25 hours for others. The prices are not that different. |
I have two swimmers, one that is competitive and the other isn’t. Every Advanced and NDG/Select/NTG had the same amount of access to the pool during the early years of training. Yes, your child can move forward with the amount of practice time provided. If my advanced swimmer started out training 5-6 times per week, he would’ve burned out. The reduced amount of time isn’t a RMSC issue, it’s a county one as a result of a pandemic. Start writing emails to the county council members if you would like more pool time or... find a cure to covid. |
Be grateful you have an indoor facility. Some Montgomery County teams are practicing outside. |
For the younger kids, the prices are different. For the older kids they aren't that much different. Some groups are getting a lot of practice times, some very little. Its not fair nor are their prices given they don't pay for pool/lifeguard or county employee time. My kid gets very little. |
Some groups are barely practicing. I'd prefer my child practice outside in a heated pool given the option, especially if they can go more. Its much safer and my child would be fine with it. |
The cure for covid is people stop traveling, eating out and socializing but that's not going to happen. The advanced group swim 1-2 times a week more in juniors than the regular. Mine gladly will swim 5-6 days a week and at times we've supplemented elsewhere to get the practices in. Yours may not do well with more but some of our kids do better and enjoy more. |
That's just not how it works. Advanced juniors are expected to swim 3d/wk, if they want to come to an extra practice, great. This is not "barely attending". If they want to play basketball and piano, great. If they want to do math tutoring another day, great. Then, when the kid makes it to NTG in high school and they are ready to commit all their activity time to swimming, there is still somewhere to progress and a better chance they haven't burned out or suffered overuse injuries. Happy, healthy swimmers should be the goal. Also, if they expected everyone to attend every practice offered for minis, juniors, advanced juniors, the groups would actually be smaller and less kids would get the opportunity to participate. The numbers are based on some portion of kids being out of any practice. Other clubs just offer the set schedule of your 2-3 days per week, and you can figure out your other activities around that from season to season. I have always enjoyed the flexibility because anyone involved in soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc., knows those schedules come out last minute every season. |
How old is your child? What swim group is s/he in? |
Juniors. We have yet to hear the new plan from RMSC. Any suggestions on where else to go? |
They absolutely should expect swimmers to come to every practice. We do and still get in multiple other activities some through school some outside no issue. |
You should start your own club. You clearly have superior knowledge about everything. |
