Carnegie Mellon vs UVA where would you go?

CMU x 1 million

Cost first. Then, use the difference to pay for grad school.

Agreed.

+1

Anything not computer related, especially more biomedical uva is fine, cmu not world class there so $40k/year is not worth it. Good luck and congrats to the kid!

For undergraduate degree. DS hasn't made his mind about career but most likely in financial sector. Agreed with previous post, it is no brainier to pay for HYPSM but not sure about CMU. Middle class, can afford $40k difference but want to make sure it is worth it.

Then definitely CMU. We have a warped view of UVA living in this area, CMU is considerably more prestigious and their typical students are very different.

+1 it’s worth it, also can do internships at Silicon Valley campus

I think it really depends on how much money you have saved and what that money means to you. Only you can answer that.

In math, UVA is 47, CMU is 32. Maybe not enough of a difference to get excited about. BUT CONSIDER THIS: math majors tend to get hired on the strength of their CS electives/minor/double-major/whatever, not on their knowledge of real analysis, abstract algebra and topology. AND CMU is #1 for CS in the country.

It's already been established by PPs that CMU is the superior choice for engineering. Here, we see it is for math as well.

Carnegie Mellon is better, if you like Pittsburgh. I am very familiar with both. CM would be a more selective group of students and faculty. It would be worth the extra money if Pittsburgh is a fit. Less sick, binge drinking at CM, also a plus!!!

Private vs Public?
City vs suburbs? What does your kid prefer?
Size: 6K undergrad vs 16K undergrad
Summer plans: Lots of summer internships for CMU students in Pittsburgh - which once they are in off-campus housing means not having to struggle to find housing
More opportunity to work with professors/companies as a student at CMU because of their size and partnerships
Student gets to experience living in a different area of the country - although maybe not terribly different
Into professional sports? Steelers, Pirates, Penguins
The typical CMU student is very different than the typical UVA student - where does your child see him/herself?

These are a few things I didn't see in the above posts that might matter in making a decision. One thing that I noticed was that, overall, for the pro-UVA people it was about $. So if that isn't a huge barrier.....

We are looking at a similar situation with UMD (top nationally-ranked major) and DS being offered a significant merit scholarship.

not for finance. MU is known as a serious quant-school is significantly better than Darden (just looks at the Wall St. firms that hire from each of the schools, for both undergrad and grad students).

nope.

Does the kid get to pick based on where they’ll be happiest?

If you pick one based on data, but the kid is miserable and decided to check out or goof off, isn’t that a waste of money?
