Carnegie Mellon vs UVA where would you go?

CMU without question. Stimulating peers and amazing coursework.

UVA to save money for grad school. UVA does very well with graduate school placements

CMU for sure

Knowing the major/potential career field would help.

Can the family spend the additional 160k for CMU without flinching? Then sure, go to CMU.

If there's significant sacrifice, then UVA.

Sorry, just noticed the math major. Career thoughts?

My philosophy is that you only pay for HYPS and may be M. Now, in many cases, those schools may be close to your instate options, so that's fine. Or, if you're able to get into HYPSM, then you probably have some great private merit options. But, as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't pay that much extra. Go to UVA.

for engineering or computers hands down CMU. husband went there. it opened amazing doors for jobs. met wonderful classmates that are lifelong friends.
many companies only recruit at CMU.
depends on the kid though. CMU is not for the super social type kids. it's best for mis-fits or kids that have their own lane.

I find this hard to believe unless you're talking about a Pittsburgh-based small business.

Yeah that’s just pure bs.

It’s not BS.
I don’t mean only CMU, but cmu and a handful of other schools (less than 5), and if Cmu it makes a huge difference.
In other words, it’s a very loyal school in terms of alumni.
My grads recruit and hire my grads and yes this happens with other schools and fields, but some companies exclusively recruit there and a tiny other number of schools.

Which companies?

And for which subject areas/degrees? OP is a math major.

Flee STEM. Foreigners get those jobs. Be a plumber. Toilets always back-up.

Net Present value for a degree from Carnegie is significantly higher than UVA. Carnegie is ranked 18, while UVA is 1080. Not even close.
