| If Robotics or Engineering CMU no question! |
|
Companies that hire engineers, specifically phds. Not always to do engineering work.
The finance sector does heavy recruiting there. |
| CMU is a drab campus and from touring the area the Pitt kids give off a much happier vibe. Unless kid is into hard-core CS or engineering and doesn’t really care about the social aspects, UVA. |
For undergraduate degree. DS hasn't made his mind about career but most likely in financial sector. Agreed with previous post, it is no brainier to pay for HYPSM but not sure about CMU. Middle class, can afford $40k difference but want to make sure it is worth it. |
So you can’t name them? |
Then definitely CMU. We have a warped view of UVA living in this area, CMU is considerably more prestigious and their typical students are very different. |
I disagree with this. CMU is in the heart of Pittsburgh. It might be too gritty for some people, but it is vibrant. The kids from all the universities in Pittsburgh mix, as well. |
Really? Look at which companies have a large presence in Pittsburgh. Look at the ones that have a large presence in Charlottesville. Look at the partnerships that CMU has. Look at the ones that UVA has. |
| If wanting to do engineering/science/math, CMU. If business, UVA hands down (assuming he’s confident of getting into McIntire after second year). |
Source? |
Pittsburgh is an interesting city. The buildings at CMU are ugly. Nothing like the grounds at UVA or even some of the buildings at Pitt. And Pittsburgh can be gloomy much of the year, compared to warmer and sunnier Charlottesville. But, again, if you’re a CS nerd who wants to work for a high-tech start-up, CMU may be better. |
People don't stay in the exact same place after graduation. Come on. Just think about where all your friends and colleagues went to college. Still waiting on that list of companies that ONLY hire students from CMU. |
And there are 29 colleges and Universities in Pittsburgh. |
But on this board, UVA can do no wrong. |
This one may be more relevant because it adjusts for the mix of majors at the schools. But it still shows Carnegie Mellon ahead. https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/college-rankings/#interactive |
