I cannot bear the thought of not going to the gym for two weeks or more

Who's dying? There has been 29 deaths (nursing home patients), and hundreds and hundreds probably thousands of US cases

This is just the beginning. You know that right? Even Italy is two weeks away from its peak. US is nowhere near peak yet.

And I haven't gone for a week now. And I'm missing it tremendously. It's horrible.

But I don't want to carry this virus to my parents or my elderly neighbors. And so I'm going to look into some home workouts that I won't enjoy nearly so much, but at least will help me work my muscles a little bit.

In the meantime, I'm still paying my (boutique) gym, because I really really want it to still be around when this whole thing is over.

Totally in the same boat. My son even has Olympic weights and a squat rack, but the rack is rickety and has no safety pins, so he only uses it when I spot him. No way I'm going to try to do heavy squats with no power rack. Also can't do 245+ pound bench with no spotter (teen DS isn't strong enough to help me re-rack) and a rickety bench rack that I'll knock over when I re-rack the weights. I've thought of doing high rep squats, but if I do enough to get a workout I'll be back at the same issue of not having safety pins and I don't know how to drop a bar with 185 or 225 pounds safely off my back if I fail on rep 15 without a power rack. Plus I _hate_ high reps. And, we don't own enough weights for me to deadlift or floors that could take it if I tried.

First world problems, but a drag for me.

We have NO IDEA how many people have died. The government isn't testing people.

They’re not dedicated. They are financially dependent. They don’t want to be there and you shouldn’t be there.

Some are financially dependent. I know many instructors who sincerely don't do it for the (meager) paycheck, but because it helps keep their own fitness in check.

And I should absolutely be there. It's good for my psychical, and mental health. In addition to *helping* my immune system, blood pressure, etc.

You are an idiot. We have no idea how many people have corona virus because we're not testing. Hundreds or thousands of people in DC have it today. The virus can live in the air for 9 hours and on surfaces for 2-3 days.

I haven't missed lifting at the gym in 4 years, but I'm not going now. I can't imagine doing an exercise class with a room full of sweaty people breathing hard.

Good for you, stay home then. Many of us don't have crippling anxiety and aren't afraid of sweat or cooties.

There are so many great options for working out at home these days. I have a Peloton and its amazing, but there is other great content out there as well. Try out the HASFit App; they have great free weight training based workouts. I also like the Nike Training Club app, and they have free content as well. Or just go for a run outside!

Suck it up and go for a run, OP. Use the time to reflect on why you are so rigid.

I love my gym classes and go about four times a week. I hate the idea of not going but I'm trying to expand to other exercises for a while. My DS8 and I threw the football (nerf football because ouch) around yesterday for about 20 minutes. I work out, I lift weights regularly but I was slightly out of breath from playing catch. It was either sneaky COVID-19 impacting my lung function or I was doing an exercise that I never do and my body noticed. Maybe a change in exercise will be good for me.

Sure -- doing what public health experts recommend is "crippling anxiety" and being afraid of "cooties." Isn't there a q-anon message board that you should be hanging out on?

"I can't imagine doing an exercise class with a room full of sweaty people breathing hard."

that sounds like pretty bad, irrational anxiety to me -- especially if you're avoided this for 4 years.

Well, if you die, your weight won't matter at all.

People are avoiding the gym but going in droves to Walmart, Costco and other grocery stores to panic buy toilet paper and bottled water.

The whole thing is ridiculous if you ask me. Wash your hands, don't touch your face and stay away from obviously ill people.

Solitary confinement is a *punishment* that they give prisoners in prison.

We are free. You can bubble yourself up in your house but at some point you will have to go outside and be near other people. This virus is enormously contagious and, yes, probably a good percentage of people will get it before a vaccine is developed. Of those that do get it, the vast majority will be fine w/o any kind of medical intervention.

The vulnerable populations like people in long term nursing facilities are the folks that we need to worry about. I would like to see more resources put towards those folks instead of the able bodied, healthy, relatively youthful folks who really are not in any great risk from this.

But that is me.

You need to find the right balance of feeling safe. If your gym stays open and you feel better going, then go. But then go directly home and shower and change clothes. All theses precautions are not about your individual safety. They are about slowing down the spread of the disease so our hospitals can handle the cases of the people whose lives are in danger. It is not meant to imply if you leave the house you die.

DP.

It's not necessarily about weight for everyone - gym time is important for our mental health.

And many of us value quality of life - I'd rather die early doing things I enjoy, rather than years quarantined at home or months isolated doing nothing. What the hell kind of life is that?

I went to Gold's last night. I washed my hands before & after, and used wipes on the equipment. It wasn't crowded at all - there are more people at my office right now than at the gym last night. I think you can use the weights at the gym and keep a social distance as well.
