I cannot bear the thought of not going to the gym for two weeks or more

Except the schools won't reopen the week after next. That is a fantasy.

And they are probably better positioned to weather this storm than the smaller boutique fitness centers. Maybe they believe Trump when he says that we’ll be down to 5 cases ... last week?

My husband is a member of Lifetime, and I'm a member of Orange Theory, and I'm disturbed and appalled by how both are handling this. At least OTF has been sending emails out about how they're keeping the facility clean (suposedly). Lifetime has been absolute radio silence. They are communicating via their FB group but the fact that they haven't just closed outright is outrageous.

I’m at Solidcore and while I adore the studio, the willful ignorance about the need to close is hard to watch. They went from “keep high fiving” to “just elbow bump” to “you get your own clean machine it’s awesome.” All of it ignores the intentional gathering of people from different households, any of whom could be infected and a vector of infection. Flatten the curve. Non-essential group activities need to be shut down by the government because the financial disincentive for the gym to do it voluntarily is immense, and the lack of awareness or concern from clients makes a voluntary cessation unlikely.

Eh. The classes at solidcore are so small that, while still riskier than staying at home, are much less risky than larger classes with varied equipment, etc. Flatten the curve and don't go. Plenty of people will voluntarily stay away.

It’s a group of 10 and then another group of 10 etc cycling in and out of the studio throughout the day, sweating and sharing equipment, cubbies, bathrooms, all in a relatively tight space. Even with people staying home, this is a very bad idea. I wish the owner would start brainstorming with the community how we can temporarily close studios without leaving individual studios out to dry, and giving clients opportunities to stay committed to the program even with a temporary closure. Maybe offer an online Pilates-type class put together by instructors or, I don’t know, anything that doesn’t pretend that everything is fine as long as the machines are frequently cleaned.

Gaining a few pounds is worse than being on a ventilator or dying? Or infecting others and causing them to be on a vent or die? Something is wrong with you!!!!!!

Get over yourself, OP.

Anyone still going to Orangetheory? Running everyday instead is going to cause injury.

If you were in NY, NJ, or CT, you'd have no choice. All gyms are shutting down at 8:00 tonight.

This way you can ask for a credit or dues reduction instead of just losing your money. I’m glad.

Also bummed I have to stay home from the gym but the weekend before last I heard that there was community transmission in DC and given that dh has emphysema, no way was I going to go to the gym and risk bringing this home to him. So last Monday was kind of weird, working out at home and working on my job from home and all, but in a matter of a day or two everyone I knew was posting about working from home.
