Gus Donolo. Good coach when he finds time to coach, but more focused on the next team, gig, Futsal league etc. Spreads himself thin.

+1 By far the best technical coach at the club- rest are average at best. Wish he coached more.

I totally agree.

GFR does not have enough good 06 or 07 players to field a strong team. They are hanging around at some of the older ages and the 05 team looks promising. They do have talented 08 and 09 teams that will be competitive against other DA teams when the time comes if players stay. My biggest concern is MU will take some of these players and have them play up as an attempt to save the 06 and 07 teams.

Since there is not a pattern of moving on to a more challenging -- travel, cost, competition -- and high level league at this club (unlike McLean, BRYC, FCV, etc. where for years the families have seen the "next level" as something to aspire to) I wonder how many of the good kids even are thinking they want to play DA. Not because they can't, but because they haven't been a system that made them prepared for the opportunity. Perhaps that's why few 06/07s moved to MU? Even if the entire teams are not amazing, surely there were some players who could have?

I agree on all points, and it's a valid fear. What I think they should do is accept that some teams may not be as strong and not prop them up. Let the talent stay with its team. They could always also look to partner clubs for the 06s and 07s.

Given what GFR was before and is now, I think the talent at the younger age groups was precisely to make that move to MU.

They (MU) are already doing this. Only 1/2 of their 06 team is 06 players. The rest is 07, 08 and even 09 players. Next year they will hopefully get a few more talented 06’s because they are going to have to field an 07 team. My guess is that unless there is an influx of talent the 07 team is going to be heavy with 08 and 09 players. And they will lose all their games. It’s unfortunate because there are enough strong 08 players at GFR and playing on the 06 team where that age group could perform well.

The team is mostly 06s, not half. Only a few are playing up. Next year will be easier to get 07 numbers from their partner clubs. If they only end up needing only a few 07s, the 08/09 team will be very strong in U13 next year.

How would they only need a few 07s if they don't have a team now and not that many of the current 06s are 07s/08s? Seems like they would need a whole team of 07s to enable 08s to play at age?

They added 3 partner clubs this year. That’s a pool of 60 07s as a starting point.

There are only 7 2006 FT players, and only 18 of 27 players total (including PT) are 2006s. That means a substantial number of players on the field are not 2006s, with 9 2007 and younger rostered.

Still not half. 18/27 = 66% are 06s

So they have 18 2006 players. That leaves a core group of 07/08/09 players for the next age group. That group will be playing U14 next year, which is what age those players are playing right now. Sounds like a decent plan to me.

The have 7 FT 2006 players and 11 PT players rostered from partner clubs. They don't "have" 18 2006 players, PT is not a commitment.
