Julius West MS student missing-- West End Parl neighborhood of Rockville

One has white parents, and is from an upper middle class neighborhood. I think the police are treating them the same.

I thought searching the neighborhood was kind of weird and unorganized.
She’s obviously not walking around Rockville in this weather. She’s at someone’s house.

Thought the same thing. Plus a helicopter search?

Our ES principal sent out an email past 8pm last night asking people to come search for this girl. Really? There was a girl missing in Aspen Hill last week, and that same principal didn't send out an email for that, despite the fact that she went missing just a few blocks away from the ES.

PP

To be clear, I hope she is found safe and sound. Just commenting that the PP was not the only person who thought things were weird.

I think that's just the Rockville community for you. Not weird - just very concerned and trying to be helpful. They want to help.

The missing Aspen Hill girl also lives in Rockville. Yet, no community search, no helicopters. Why the different response?

She was found

But she was missing for four or five days. During that time, there was no community search. Our Principal didn't even send an email about her. Yet for some reason, this girl has drawn so much attention. Makes me (as a parent) think there is something strange going on in this case, whereas with the other Rockville girl, the police knew she was a runaway from the beginning.

It's possible they have reason to believe this girl is in danger and just aren't sharing with the public.

it follows that, if this is the case, the situation is more complicated than would be improved by a bunch of well-meaning neighbors walking the neighborhood and looking underneath every blade of grass. Fully appreciating folks' interests and desire, however.

I live on the west end of Rockville and this week on my neighborhood list serve next-door, there was a post about a woman who was grabbed and dragged into the woods at knifepoint . Fortunately her husband was just jogging ahead of her and he was able to turn around and scare the attacker away. They listed this as an attempted rape, but it could’ve been an attempted murder. Anyway that was not too far away, off Clopper Road in Gaithersburg.

I am a neighbor and am shocked by the disrespect shown in this chat group. If you are not interested in helping with the search, just ignore the search, instead of judging the family and the community. I, like so many of my (and LemLem's) neighbors, am deeply concerned and feel like I need to do something … really ANYTHING to help. So we joined the search parties, posted fliers, put at the word as best we could. The owner of Carmen's is also a member of the community who re-opened late at night to give people a place to gather and get moving. Huge kudos to him and to all. I am proud to be part of this community and comforted in knowing that if this were my child, my community would also rally in support. Good grief, I'm glad you naysayers aren't my neighbors.

I'm a PP who posted about it being strange. Thanks for the heads up. I did not realize this girl had White parents.

The missing Rockville girl from a few weeks ago was Latina. She went missing literally just a few blocks away from Barnsley ES. The Principal did not send out a single email for the 4 days she was missing. Yet, I got an email from Barnsley about this case last night after just a few hours.

Definitely felt strange, and now it makes more sense to me, honestly.

I'm a PP, and I'm certainly not judging. I'm trying to understand what's going on, as a parent. Because I also live in Rockville and am concerned that we've had two Rockville girls that have gone missing at around the same time (between 7 - 7:30am) on their way to MS.

It feels very disconcerting that two girls have gone missing from the same town in just a few weeks.

I sincerely do hope this girl is found safe and sound.

One reason this case has received a lot of attention very quickly is that at least one of her parents has a leadership role in a large community running group with a big social media presence. The flyer was shared widely very shortly after it was made available, and that has also helped catch the attention of local businesses and other groups.

I would definitely ask about that if I was a Barnsley parent or neighbor.

I agree with this as I first heard about this missing girl on my nextdoor app. I did not hear about it from the local police. Since it was posted on social media it has been a better communicated. That I think is on parents and neighbors, not police and school. The school may be communicating things because parents have likely contacted them once they heard about it on social media. The same may not have occurred with the girl in Aspenhill.

In this case, the community rallied immediately and worked every possible contact, resulting in a lot of blasts, announcements, etc. from a lot of places. It is a perfect example of the power of the community. Also I understand the early and substantial police involvement was due to her age and the temperatures last night, which made this situation immediately critical.

The Police literally respond to missing teenagers on a daily basis. They very rarely make the news.
Anonymous
One reason to give teens smart phones. This teen had a tracfone. So there is nothing to trace.

I, like everyone else, hope she is safe and sound. I in fact live in this neighborhood too, and have a walker to JWMS. Nobody is being disrespectful, I think, its mostly a function of bewilderment and confusion. It is in fact very shocking that there is a missing child and the police in fact dont seem to be the ones doing the searching. There was no Amber Alert. There was no email from MCPS.

Here's reality now: your child can be missing for an entire school day, and nobody will call you. 18 hours will go by before it makes the news. It won't even be on the local police department's website the next day. I'm not happy with this. You shouldn't be either.
