Yes, of course that was silly. But....Kate Moss was still beautiful. They can both be beautiful! |
|
I never said she was not beautiful I said her beauty only translate to a small very white very wealthy audience... and gay men. |
The wealthy part is where you’re messing up. I’ll give you white. White middle class youngish females. She was the grungy model icon that was “cool” and sexy, but in a new way. |
No I’m not messing up. The business of fashion is about making money in the 80s and 90s they did not think they could make money off of black people. There are many industries that do not market to black people because they believed they couldnt make money. Fashion is no different. Kate moss Was only a fashion icon because of the time. Besides if you look at pictures of her when she was 14 she wasn’t with Ashley thin she was actually more beautiful now because she was younger but because she actually looked normal. |

At 14 she was more beautiful because she looked normal instead of extremely thin |
DP. I agree the marketing was targeted through whites at the time. But rich? You're wrong. As other PPs pointed out, her image was largely used to sell $40 perfume. Every middle class mall rat could scrape together the money to buy that or could ask for it from Santa. That's where the money is, not the $1000 dresses. Was she a healthy weight? Probably not, but that was the aspirational look of the day--Courtney Cox, Catherine Bessette--whether hi or lo, skinny minimalism or grunge. |
She's been a model for as long as I've been noticing clothes - decades now - and she was known for her "heroin chic" when she was young. = extremely skinny. That's when heroin was thought to have a chic (I guess? Things were weird in the 90s) as opposed to now when it's thought of as what people turn to when they can't get their other opioids anymore. But Kate's been there through it all. |
Are you the same person that can’t make it on a HHI of $200K and claim to be poor? |
She wasn’t 14 in the 90’s those pictures are from when she was 19 and starving herself. |
That was cool. She isn’t beautiful to me but her face is interesting and het cheekbones are to die for. |
I don't know what she looked like at 14. I guess we went to different high schools. |
What? Like a previous poster, I'm similar age to KM and remember her pull. People who wore Calvin Klein Eternity had a median income way bellow the equivalent of $200K today. I'm referencing Fiesta Mall, Mesa AZ (HHI today $48K), not DCUM bubble. |
| Kate moss was one of the most successful models in history, so I don’t think her beauty had a niche audience. Her appeal was about a lot more than her face and body, it had to do with a whole look that she created, and I had to do with the values of the time. She was extremely skinny, but people saying she had no hips are really wrong. If you look at pictures of her in a bikini, she has a classic female figure, she absolutely has curves. I think female models today are a lot healthier for women to obsess over, because we don’t have to starve ourselves as much, but I also think Kate was incredibly sexy and that she had an it girl quality that made her one of the best of the best. Naomi was awesome too ( although she seems like an awful person in real life) , Not sure why people have to make this into a black versus white thing. Also, as a white woman sitting here on my fat ass, I’m tired of hearing this constant thing about skinny white women, and full figured black women. We all have different body types you know. |
But she got lucky. It was timing. Today she would not be such a big deal. It’s not DCUM saying she has no hips... she has no hips, she has a boy body. That is how the industry describes her. There is no hate for skinny white women it’s just that now most people don’t find that attractive. Many people prefer a Sofia V. |
