Your experience with a 40% FARMS rate Middle School

>>>Please note that if you are a parent of a high performing or GT African American and Latino child, then, you too better fight like Hell. Lower performing minority students (specifically African American and Latino) are negative influences towards GT AA and Latino students. There is way too much social pressure to not value education and to engage in social destructive behaviors. You want your child to thrive in an environment where being an intellectual is phenomenal and not in an environment will they will be ostracized for "acting white". <<<

I have taught in 2 high-FARMS elementary schools and one high-FARMS high school in MoCo. The quoted text is absolutely true. Parents of high-achieving AA and Latino kids must steer their kids away from low-SES ones. Too much association can really derail the academically talented kids.

White and Asian high-performing kids self-segregate; I have never seen any issues.

Listen to yourself.

Did you mean "Parents of high-achieving AA and Latino kids must steer their kids away from low-achieving ones." or "Parents of high-SES AA and Latino kids must steer their kids away from low-SES ones."?

I'll correct that for you: Smart, high-SES AA and Latino kids need to stay away from dumb, low-SES AA and Latino kids.

Everybody knows this so there was no need to post it.

People will fight his plan and put pressure on the board to come up with a logical redistricting option that will not destroy the high performing schools in Howard County. However, there are three known school board members who have their hands in the back pockets of county council members who are crazy enough to vote in Dr. Martirano's plan.

There is already backlash and community protests. The next few board meetings in Howard County are going to be quite interesting.

Also, if your child is segregated into all GT courses, then you have nothing to worry about. Physical education will be the only course that your child will have to interact with the lower performing students. Physical education is usually okay because I find that students who are not academically inclined actually do well in physical education. However, if your child is in any of the regular major subject courses (math, science, geography, English, etc.), then your child will encounter some problems. Parents of GT students have nothing to stress about. Parents of non GT students better fight like Hell!

The GT students self segregate themselves from those students. So, there is limited interaction, peer pressure, and excusable social destruction if your child takes all GT courses. Parents of white and Asian students will have nothing to worry about because for the most part white and Asian students self segregate themselves anyway.

My kids are AA, both attended/currently attend TPMS, and are high performing. They did not have the experiences you note. Several of my younger DD’s friends are low income and are doing well in terms of behavior and academics. I’d rather they hang out than my kids hang with those middle class TPMS white kids who smoke weed.

Are you sure your kids are at TPMS? I thought the drug problem for white kids starts in high school. When my kid was at TPMS, an AA kid brought weeds in 8 oz ziplock bads and threw them around with other AA kids during PE. We never received any email about that incident. I am not sure if it was an isolated event or happens often.

Op,
Please save yourself and kids the drama!
Send your kid to a small affordable private school.
My DD is ten and I will never put her future at risks by placing her at a school with 40% poor kids

In less your kid has a job, all kids are poor. Parents may be low income but that doesn't make them bad people or bad kids. Except religious schools at age 10, few are affordable.

I think the drugs your kid does at home made him hallucinate that event.

Maybe because it didn't happen.

It did happen. Police was called and came. It was eye opening for my DC.

There’s a reason why parents dont want to send their kids to school with the poors: bc they have “poor” habits which your kid will either pick up or will interfere with ur kid’s learning. 6th was a complete loss for my kid, would have been better off staying at home watchimg tv.

I know and this is why they need to achieve uniform FARMS throughout the county by whatever means necessary. MCPS has an overall FARMS rate below 40%. Concentrating it in a few unfortunate schools is wrong. Diversity busing is the only real answer.
