NP. Congrats to the PP’s kids because those are wonderful MAP scores. I am sure it was very disappointing to miss the magnets.
I wonder if MCPS is doing a CoGAT to MAP correlation. So a pretty high CoGAT ( 95%) and a very high MAP (280!) would tell them a bright child was somehow getting enrichment to match their ability. But a very high CoGAT ( 99%) and a good but lower MAP would tell them a child was missing the enrichment they might need. OP might want to ask for more than MAP scores when searching for a pattern here. |
This is such a great point. MAP scores demonstrate exposure to material, not raw intelligence. I have no idea whether MCPS is looking for kids with a disconnect between those two scores, but it would be a smart move. Yes, it would mean kids like PP's, who have very high scores but are not outliers at their home schools, would stay at home schools receiving enriched instruction, but I think that's where we are ending up anyway. The emphasis at this point appears to be on kids who would stand out from the crowd, whether at Col. Lee or at Pyle. |
Whether I believe what you have bolded is completely irrelevant to the post I was responding to. The point was that the same MCPS official who claimed that the process was blind w.r.t. to the other factors had no problem acknowledging that MCPS did try to balance gender. Again, this was a few years ago. |
I've heard this claim from others before but like a lot of things stated on this board may just be a rumor. Can you provide a citation, please... |
HVe you read the Choice Study? The report pointed out the race unbalance in MCPS’s selective programs and suggested to use group norm to reach the racial balance. |
| 08:25 - MCPS can and does take gender into consideration. You could probably call and ask them directly and they will answer your question. I do not have a written source, but I am an MCPS parent and have been to multiple open house presentations on the older and the newer magnet admissions programs, for both middle and high school programs as well as the infamous meeting at the admin building where MCPS tried to explain the new criteria that included cohort but eliminated teacher recommendations etc. |
I do not have any citation, but I have been at a meeting where the administrator acknowledged this in response to a parent's question. This was one of those open houses, so I am not surprised other posters claiming the same. (I have a vague memory of someone mentioning that there was no quota, but it was more like if the admissions committee had to choose between a boy and a girl who had a similar academic profile, the decision might go in favor of the girl.) It is possible this might have changed too with the new admissions process. |
It's noted on MCPS docs about the selection process. See page 7: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/msmagnet/about/Middle%20school%20magnet%20selection%20process%20overview.PDF |
Weird - I was in a meeting where the administration said they couldn't do that legally. |
page 7 just discusses the review process but says nothing of the kind. Here's the exact text. I can't believe you people keep trying to perpetuate these lies. Sorry, slide 6 states "factors for consideration" and notes that gender is indicated on application. How would you interpret this? |
Sorry, slide 6 states "factors for consideration" and notes that gender is indicated on application. How would you interpret this? "Profiles will denote gender" i.e. the admissions committee will know the gender of the applicant - the process is NOT gender-blind. |
Agree with this. I went to a few meetings this year and MCPS can take gender into consideration. The applications are NOT gender-blind. Our CES Principal also told us the applications are NOT gender-blind. |
| The presentation says gender is indicated on the form but is is also not listed under the criteria. |
Because gender is not a factor for admission such as the CogAt test, MAP scores, etc. But gender is indicated on the form under the slide "factors for consideration". Which means that the committee knew the gender of the applicant and could use that knowledge in considering whether an applicant is accepted or not after a student met the criteria listed. |
