I think you're right - gender IS known to the reviewers, to make sure Takoma isn't all male and Eastern all female.

It’s pretty sexist to think one school would end up with only one sex without outside interference. How can that be possible?

Our CES (one of the most competitive CESs) this year had 5 kids accepted by TP/Eastern, all are girls. Given that the total number of boys is slightly more than that of girls, shall I consider this phenomenon sexist?

It is possible higher scoring girls and boys were left in their home Middle schools from your CES because of ...(strange music plays) ..."cohort."

Their home school has such a strong cohort it's one of those amazing schools that people pay hundreds of thousands more to live in boundary so surely better than some silly magnet anyway.

No assumptions being made. MCPS said they needed to balance gender.

You realize that's illegal?

There is no doubt in my mind gender is used as a determination. We know a couple of girls who had scores across the board the same or lower than the boys we know, and the girls got in. I am not saying the girls didn't deserve to go as their scores were excellent. But to say the girls, at least in our specific case, outscore the boys is dead wrong.

My DD does robotics on increasingly male teams as the kids get older. Sometimes there are only 1 or 2 other girls. Sometimes she’s the sole female. It’s rough. New boys assume she’s incompetent. Some veteran boys know she’s not, but they resent her presence on the team or act that way to fit in. Coaches seldom intervene. Some coaches and other parents told us they were surprised she hasn’t dropped out. I think more than a few are glad she didn’t, but the culture of the teams isn’t improving. Every time a girl drops out or doesn’t return the next time, the boys are harder on my DD.

My DD not only has to be as good as the boys, she has to have a thick skin.

Imagine being one of only 2-3 girls in the TPMS Magnet if there was no balancing for gender.

You should sue the county then. You'd make millions!

Really? When DC was in the magnet at TPMS, it was acknowledged that they tried to get more girls. We were told the admission process was completely "blind" w.r.t. everything else - race/home school/etc. I do not know if this has changed with the new admissions process.

And you really believe that?

Yes, it’s also illegal to use race for this. I’m aware some angry parents whose kids were rejected have dreamed up all sorts of kooky scenarios. However, if you have any real evidence as opposed to unprovable hunches please share it.

Sorry to hear that. I wonder if I know the kid because there is an Asian boy in my DD's class who fits this description and I know he got rejected.

My kid got 270 on MAP-M and 230 on MAP-R in the Spring of 5th Grade.

He was rejected, and we're in a nonW cluster. I didn't think he'd get into Eastern, but he really was hoping to get into TPMS because he loves math.

PP again - would like to see scores from other kids if people are willing to post.

PP you replied to. I just want to see a thorough investigation.

I have heard enough anecdotes from close friends who have detailed their child's scores as well as their classmates', to know that some Asian students had better scores overall than non-Asians (same year, same school comparison), and the Asian students were not accepted whereas the others were. That's for the magnet middle schools. I also know this also goes on at the CES level, when friends told me their children's scores and I found out who had gotten in and who hadn't.

I have no way of knowing what's going on, since these are anecdotes, not scientifically accumulated data. However, with what friends have confided in me for the past several years (up to 5 years ago)... the pattern is starting to disturb me .

I'm sure there were many girls who outscored boys. They just don't share their scores. Most people don't. My girls way outscored most accepted students on the Raven of the old test. We did not share their scores. We only know because we had median scores of accepted students, and their scores were very far above.

Boys in the magnet can be real jerks and academic bullies. These programs need more girls. And, yes, girls can be jerks too. But, the aggression seems to come from boys. Girls need to have numbers.

I tell my child not to discuss his scores with other kids as he doesn't want to make them feel bad if they didn't do as well. We don't discuss them either.

95 MCPS score on the CogAt is kind of low for a magnet especially for someone who attended one of the good schools that people pay hundreds of thousands more to be zoned for.
