Why would Sasha Obama attend University of Michigan?

It’s rather unusual for someone who presumably could get into HPY.

Not everyone wants that. Maybe she visited her sister and decided the stuffy vibe wasn't her. We knew of her thru the private school sports circuit in her ES and MS days and she is laid back. Her best friends are going to Michigan and maybe she wanted a big school big sports vibe. Good for her. She already has the name. She can do anything she wants when she graduates.

This makes sense, but for some reason I feel that if she were the daughter of a Republican president, the decision would be viewed more as evidence of her lacking substance, and being more interested in partying than intellectual pursuit.

It's ironic that this thread is discussing why on earth she would choose UMich over an Ivy ... Of course, if she were headed to an Ivy (or Stanford or U of Chicago or whatever) there'd be a heated discussion about whether she only got in because she is black and has influential parents.

She can't win.

Everyone assumes that the children of presidents get admitted to Ivy's because of their parents.

Why the heck not? You really think her future is going to be tanked because she attends a big 10 school rather than an Ivy?

Her future will be golden no matter what university she attends, or even if she attends no university at all.

Because she wants to go there. Is it a HPY? No,but it's a good school. She's far more likely to be successful and happy at a school she wants to go to vs a school she's forced to.

It is a great choice. Ivies don’t equate success. The Ivy League graduates in my family have not found success nor lucrative careers. Sasha is already rich and well connected. She should enjoy college and don’t worry about judgement.

Any kid who chooses to get off the coasts, at least for a few years, is wise in my book. I hope she has a great experience.

Just want different things. Maybe she doesn’t wanna high-pressure Ivy academic environment. Maybe she wants a big 10, college spirit, rah-rah experience. Who knows? It’s not like it’s going to ruin her life to go to University of Michigan. It’s a fine school and kids who attend there and matriculate going to do wonderful things.

Because she wants to?

Michigan is consistently ranked in the top 5 public universities in the country: 3rd or 4th in US News, 2nd in the Times Higher Education rankings. Many of the smartest kids in the country choose UCLA, Michigan, Berkeley, etc. Maybe they like the size and feel of a public university, maybe they don't want to be surrounded by Jared Kushners, or maybe they just can't afford Harvard. Regardless of the reason, if she happens to go to Michigan, Sasha will be in excellent company.

Some of you seem to be frozen in time as 7th grade mean girls.

There were heated discussions about whether the Bush girls got into Yale/Texas (especially Barbara at Yale) only because she's legacy and from a prominent family.

The answer is actually yes to a degree. Both the Obama and Bush and any other presidential kids are given huge legs up due to family status and connections.

She did. This was her choice. I have no idea why anyone would disparage it. Michigan is an awesome school, anyone who goes there will have a great chance to do well in life.

But then he went to Yale.

That’s a pretty reasonable assumption.
