How to vacation and not appear as though you have an eating disorder?

Anonymous
One excuse you could use is that your doctor has recommended this diet (which honestly isn’t a diet but just healthy eating).

I manage vacations by skipping breakfast or just having a hard boiled egg and fruit, a normal lunch if possible, and then only indulging if it's a really good restaurant. Otherwise, I'll just get a salad or soup. I don't think there's any getting around it seeming different to other people, but I feel like if I at least keep breakfast and lunch under control, dinner can be more "normal."

You do sound disordered.

No. I have no self control and I own it. I know in my heart of hearts that I will continue eating like crap once I get back home if I allow myself to do so on this vacation. Vacations have ruined every single attempt at weight loss over the last few years, and I refuse to give in again this time.

This doesn't help with the a**hole relatives, but I managed not to get off track on my last vacation by being at least PARTIALLY adherent to my diet. I did allow indulgences (In & Out burgers like every day ... So Cal road trip!) but I was very careful about breakfast, only ate a big dinner if it was something special, and worked out every day. I also tracked my calories (not every day, but about half of the days). I made sure that I got right back to my program (weight watchers) when I got home by grocery shopping the next day. I managed to hold my weight steady and not gain, and did get back on track.

Basically, I think expecting vacation to be 100% perfect is impossible, but the key is to maintain at least PART of the structure and routine. So if that means breakfast, workouts, tracking ... just do that. Also just put a ton of effort into getting back on track ASAP when you return.

I haven't read all the responses but my advice would be to eat healthy but don't talk about it incessantly. I just finished a business trip with colleagues, several of whom made a big issue at every meal about their points or their carbs or their need to work off the excess to keep to their diets. It was annoying and drew much more attention to their restrictions than simply eating as they wished would have done.

Your breakfast sounds normal. They sound pushy and like over-eaters. Stay strong, OP!

But my family is food obsessed and I’m not judging, just stating fact. I sure don’t tell them they don’t need that extra slice of pizza, and they should give me the same respect and not tell me I need a slice. (“You’re on vacation. Have it. HAVE IT! Be bad with us! You deserve this!”)

So you know they will do this. You're going in prepared, their behavior therefore cannot surprise you. You have to go in prepared to let it in one year and out the other. Roll your eyes into the back of your head on the inside and smile and ignore on the outside.

You have willpower, you've shown it through your weight loss success. Now apply that willpower to not engaging them on this issue. Let it roll right off you. It's the only way.

Not everyone is a fat ass.

Maybe I’m just luckier than you. I’m a size 4.

NP. Clearly you don't "own it" if you can't nut up and open your mouth to tell family and friends: "It all looks amazing, guys. I just know myself and I know I don't have self-control. I honestly can't fall off the wagon. Please enjoy, and I envy you a bit, but please don't push me. I've lost weight and I feel good about my choices right now."

You clearly don't have a dysfunctional family. Consider yourself lucky.

Babe, I do have dysfunctional family members. I CHOOSE not to vacation with them. See how that works?

who tf is "babe"

Someone who makes false assumptions about a stranger’s family dynamic because their perspective doesn’t fit her narrative, apparently.

OP, I think all of the posters who are saying that no one will comment on your food choices have never experienced being around family that eats unhealthily after losing weight.

I have a lot of extended family who are fat. I never talk to them about what I eat -- it's the last thing in the world I want to talk to them about. But, when they see me eating 1/5 the calories that they are at dinner, they make comments -- "you can have just a little dessert", "live a little", etc. They also really, really try to get me to drink, even though they haven't seen me have a drink in years.

I don't talk about what I'm eating or not eating. I say "no thanks" for dessert or other food that I don't want -- no more, ever. Sometimes these one sided conversations go on quite long -- "Oh come on, you can have some pie!"

"No thanks."

"It's Christmas, live a little."

"No thanks."

"Well, at least have a glass of wine."

"No thanks."

"Ice cream?"

"No thanks."

"You know, you don't need to lose any more weight."

...

"Do you want some fudge?"

"No thanks."

It's a total PITA, and I minimize time around them. Hopefully your experience will be better.

Ew, no. I’m not eating a burger without a bun, that’s absurd. You do you, but don’t act like the rest of us have to be that strict to maintain a healthy weight.

I was eating like this when vacationing with my in-laws a few years ago. However, that was at the end of my program, and I looked really fit, so they didn't dare say anything...

Stay strong, OP!

Most don’t. Especially on vacation. I’m a lucky girl I guess.

Same. I don’t know anyone in my circle who eats like this. (We’re not fat either)
