Sure they do -- magnets, or move elsewhere in MoCo.

I don't want MoCo to be like the DC model, where more than half of kids are in charter schools. It's basically DCPS saying that they are so incompetent at providing education that they need to outsource it to charter schools.

Such a privileged comment. Do you really think it's easy for lower and middle class families to up and move? We are at a Focus school, and would move in a heartbeat if we could. Just not possible for everyone. That's not a 'choice'. Montgomery County is expensive.

Magnets? Four MS Magnets is a choice? Something like less than 500 students have that option. That's not a choice. That's a joke.

Westland has a magnet? News to me. Wonder what the rest of those schools have in common? ?

A more realistic post is how many seats exactly are open to kids all across the county?

Maybe 400 for the test-in Magnets? No idea how many for the lottery magnets.

Definitely a low percentage of students overall.

Way low.

Less than 1%.
Fairfax and Arlington up at 5% of student body can be served in G&T

Westland has a middle school Foreign Language Immersion Program in Spanish.

What do the rest of the schools have in common?

My daughter attends an MCPS high school and is having a phenomenal experience.

There, now we have two anecdotes.

Glad to hear it! Which HS?

Thank god there aren't any charters here. This death knell of public education is a long time GOP fantasy to harm the public by cutting taxes which benefit the common good. There are however a couple of for-profit prison companies dying to break into this arena.

Who is eligible for the Westland MS? What percentage of 5th graders are even eligible to apply? 0.0007%?

No. Public education in MCPS has been killed by the inept leadership and crappy County Council that insists on over developing the County leading to overcrowded and underfunded schools.

We have largely been very happy with our MCPS public education experience. We left DC because we refuse to get involved with the degradation of public education. Could MCPS be better? Sure! But communities make up schools and families make-up communities and individuals make up families. I'd rather focus on building healthy individuals, families, and communities! By focusing on those areas then schools can improve. I can see on this board charter school proponents are trying to rally for the support of Hogan's charter school cronies.

Uh oh. My kids got on school buses this morning and went somewhere, and now they have come back. I thought they were at school. But you're saying they weren't?

Actually the housing growth in Montgomery County has been smaller than in the region overall, and the real era of overdevelopment in the county was in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

50,000 units built in the 1950s, 65,000 units built in the 1960s, 55,000 in the 1970s, 80,000 in the 1980s, 38,000 in the 1990s, 41,000 in the 2000s, 15,000 in 2010-2016.

Exactly. Not many kids are going to be able to attend the Westland program. Not really a ‘choice’ for the majority of families in the County.

There is no school in the county that students from a majority of families in the county are going to be able to attend. It isn't possible for there to be such a thing.

Now, if you were interested in a more limited argument, like "There ought to be an ES-MS Spanish immersion program in the upcounty," that might be useful.

With "many choices"- even though they are not available for "majority" of students, it make the MCSP "looks good".
