Are there any Charter schools in Montgomery county?

This.

All MCPS cares about it how it ‘looks’. Not actually how it functions.

Who is eligible for the Westland MS? What percentage of 5th graders are even eligible to apply? 0.0007%?

Exactly. Not many kids are going to be able to attend the Westland program. Not really a ‘choice’ for the majority of families in the County.

There is no school in the county that students from a majority of families in the county are going to be able to attend. It isn't possible for there to be such a thing.

Now, if you were interested in a more limited argument, like "There ought to be an ES-MS Spanish immersion program in the upcounty," that might be useful.

Oh, please. Someone posted all these MSs as if MCPS were actually offering families a choice. We were just pointing out that there really is just an illusion of choiceX. Very few families are even eligible for these MS programs. Not really a ‘choice’.

And that’s not an argument that I’m interested in. I’d prefer MCPS offers Spanish for kids starting in K and going all the way through. As is done in other school districts.

Sure! But communities make up schools and families make-up communities and individuals make up families. I'd rather focus on building healthy individuals, families, and communities! By focusing on those areas then schools can improve. I can see on this board charter school proponents are trying to rally for the support of Hogan's charter school cronies.

That’s funny. I guess it’s possible. But it is also possible that many parents are frustrated with the mess that is MCPS and who would like to see some changes.

Sure they do -- magnets, or move elsewhere in MoCo.

I don't want MoCo to be like the DC model, where more than half of kids are in charter schools. It's basically DCPS saying that they are so incompetent at providing education that they need to outsource it to charter schools.

Such a privileged comment. Do you really think it's easy for lower and middle class families to up and move? We are at a Focus school, and would move in a heartbeat if we could. Just not possible for everyone. That's not a 'choice'. Montgomery County is expensive.

Magnets? Four MS Magnets is a choice? Something like less than 500 students have that option. That's not a choice. That's a joke.

11 middle schools.

Clemente
Eastern
MLK
Takoma Park
Argyle
Loiderman
Parkland
Hoover
Gaithersburg
SSIMS
Westland

Westland has a magnet? News to me. Wonder what the rest of those schools have in common? ?

Westland has a middle school Foreign Language Immersion Program in Spanish.

What do the rest of the schools have in common?

Who is eligible for the Westland MS? What percentage of 5th graders are even eligible to apply? 0.0007%?

I think you have to be coming from an ES immersion program. I don't think you can start immersion in MS.

It actually is a choice. Even if most people don't do it, it's still a choice. Not an illusion. There are real actual kids who are really actually in those programs. And even if you wish that MCPS would do something different.

DCUM is not representative of County voters nor of County families with school-aged kids. It's a slice. It's interesting and useful for some things, but it's not representative of the views of most people in the County.

+1

I mean, I would love to see language immersion expanded (which MCPS is doing through dual language programs) and magnets expanded (which MCPS is doing through local CES centers), but to claim there is zero "choice" is just not true.

If anything, there is "choice" in MCPS the same way there is "choice" in DCPS or other districts with charters. You have a "choice" if you have the resources and knowledge to access the system, and/or if you get a little bit lucky.

Mcps counts on educated parents to make up for their increasing amount shortcomings. To supplement/tutor all the holes in the disparate k-8 curriculum, to provide additional subject matter through private extracurriculars and camps, to provide test prep for college entrance exams, and to counsel or hire counselors for college application coaching and processes.

Without that they would be exposed for the inept admin and low standards they actually have.

To turn around and say the “parents and community make the school district” is to have extremely low expectations of the school, teachers and administrators, and that you as a taxpayer and you as a parent, blindly accept that.

No. It is unacceptable.

OK. Don't accept it. Run for a seat on the Board of Education.
