| Is the semi-private school a possible solution for GT education? I don't seem much discussion here. Also overheard that it is hard to get the approval from MCPS. |
| What is a semi-private school? Is it like a semi-private room in the hospital? |
| There was one a few years ago, but no more. |
| There was once a couple of years ago but it didnt work out. I cant remember why. |
| No. The theory is that MCPS regular schools should be so good that there's no need for charters. Even magnet schools are sparse. |
| OP, charter schools aren't semi-private. |
|
Nope, no Charter Schools in MCPS unfortunately. Parents have no choice for their kids.
|
Sure they do -- magnets, or move elsewhere in MoCo. I don't want MoCo to be like the DC model, where more than half of kids are in charter schools. It's basically DCPS saying that they are so incompetent at providing education that they need to outsource it to charter schools. |

"Gov. Larry Hogan announces plan to boost charter schools in Maryland" |
| "While charter schools are public schools in Maryland, funded by taxpayers and governed by local Boards of Education, they operate independently from central office administration — a dynamic that sometimes sparks conflict with traditional public schools." |
+1 There's also the language immersion schools for parents who want a foreign language. I too moved from DCPS, because I wanted my kid to attend a school where his peers lived nearby and were he didn't need to travel 45 minutes to get there. |
| charter school means long commute? |
Mismanagement and money problems. In their slight defense, they were trying to offer PK education but there are not public charter funds before kindergarten unless kids are at financial need. |
Is this going to happen for real? |
Wow! That would be fantastic. I hope that come to Montgomery County. Something needs to be done about MCPS. MCPS proves over and over that it does not have the best interest of kids as its core purpose. Can't even keep kids safe from sexual abuse, with the case after case after case of abuse these past two years. MCPS is too large, and too difficult to run efficiently and there need to be some changes. Currently, the school system seems more concerned about manipulating data and PR than it does about actually educating children. A whole year without a curriculum basically? Unacceptable, and yet nobody is held responsible. |
