Is calling someone “chinaman” racist?

Completely racist. Look up the when it was used frequently - during the period that Chinese workers started to come to the U.S. and the Asian Exclusion Acts were passed.

2. Your husband tried to cheer your son up by making fun of someone’s appearance. Your husband is an asshole.

I think it's fair. When my kid was being bullied, I supplied some words to use as weapons to fight back including '4 eyes', Dumbo, pig nose, etc. These words turned the table on the bully and stopped the situation. Fight fire with fire.

Wow, I hope you have bail money set aside for your kid or at least money for therapy.

Most if these school shooters have been the victims of bullies. If you think a kid won't need therapy or bail from being a victim of bullies, you must not watch the news.

Absolutely inappropriate. Your kid will now repeat this phrase and other parents will judge you.

If someone bullied my DC, they have my permission to fight back verbally - and hold no words off limit.

Let them judge.

My Dad still calls Japanese, Tojo's. He is a WWII vet and good luck changing him.

DP... so because he fought in WWII it's ok for him to continue to use racist terminologies? He may not be able to change (which is sad in and of itself), but that doesn't mean you have to accept his racism.

BTW, many Japanese Americans suffered in the US during WWII for nothing more than looking a certain way, in case your dad didn't realize this.

Exactly. My grandfather fought in the Pacific during WWII and guess what? His granddaughters are Asian and he never once used a racial slur.

+1. I think your husband should explain to your son that he made a mistake by using that term and that your son should not use it. I understand wanting to comfort a child who is being bullied, but that really wasn't the right way to do it.

I'm betting this is not the first time OP's DH has resorted to the ad hominen when trying to deal with conflict.

Wow. I feel for your DC who is allowed to use the “N” word and other racial epithets during fights and arguments. I fear this DC is not going to go far in life with such teaching. Please reconsider.

This is a question? Yes. Yes it is. Naming anyone’s race after as an insult referring to them negatively obviously implies that you’re insulting them on the basis of race - for example, that idiot is Mexican. That’s bad. Also, the term has historical racist meaning. This isn’t hard. It’s wrong. It’s hate speech.

Thanks for your support. If more parents would educate their kids on how to deal with bullies the world would be a better place. Nobody is doing their kid a favor by letting them become an easy target for bullies.

Sounds like something a deplorable would say.

Life long Dem here. I grew up in a place where bullying was "boys being boys". I didn't like to throw punches, so I learned to find a bullies weak spot and verbally attack it. 9 times out of 10 they would stop bullying me. It was self defense and I highly recommend it to any kid who gets bullied.
